The latest piece of media in the ressurgent 'zomg teh russianz' is third-person cover shooter Vanquish, by developer Platnium Games. Platnium Games were responsible for the third person actioners Mad World and Bayonetta, so you might have some idea of what the tone of the game will be like. You play hopelessly smug looking SAM GIDEON - DARPA RESEARCHER as he is sent on a mission to retrieve a solar powered doom ray stolen by BALD SPACE RUSSIANS, with the help of some ridiculously gruff and macho US Army 60-year old and an ironically (?) Russian assistant. SAM GIDEON - DARPA RESEARCHER comes equipped with the latest in shiny robot battlearmour, which basically means you slide from cover to cover on rocket boots.

I'll be honest, I like the look of it, but to say I'm a sucker for kooky Japanese bullshit would be an understatement. I'm willing to bet that the game will actually be pretty well made, but Platnium Games is not necessarily to everyone's taste, not just just in presentation but in gameplay. 'Gears of War + ridiculous superpowers + hilarious parody storytelling'. 5/5 game of the year?

The gameplay looks mildly interesting, but is it at all possible for the Japanese to come up with a storyline that isn't insane over-the-top bullshit? I mean the dialog in that trailer was almost painfull to listen to.

*sigh* I don't have the tolerance for abhorrent poorly translated japanese games that I used to.

I'll probably pick it up at a Gamestop bargin bin and skip all the cutscenes.

It never fails to amuse me to see international politics and America as depicted by Japan. I might check it out, but I'm not very enthusiastic about it right now.

It's a deliberate parody of games like Gears of War, which I suppose you figure was written by a Japanese person too?

Please. If GoW was written by a japanese person Marcus Fenix would be a tiny little stick of a man who's gender could barely be determined. Also he would launch into a ten minute speech about how the Locust were just misunderstood and the COG was really responsible for starting the war, and then he and his team would split off from the main COG forces to stop the war and FIGHT FOR PEACE!

By "over the top bullshit" I mean the MSG-style plots within plots crap and complete misunderstanding of international relations.

Like adam says, watching America and international politics as depicted by Japan can be amusing, i've just gotten rather tired of it in recent years.

But still, the game play being "GoW+Super Powers" does look interesting.

This has looked pretty boring and bland for a while. I guess people will buy it for the art.

I think it's funny how game writers are literally so bereft of ideas they're sucking Tom Clancy's cock on both sides of the Pacific. They really can't think of ANY opponent for the US other than Russia. They won't touch other ideas because presumably they'd be controversial or something. (IE: They're pussies.) Lucky for them, western media's many decades of brutalizing the former Soviet Union at every turn means they have a much friendlier atmosphere for making Russians the cackling, cat petting villains of EVERY game.

Russia invading America is the new 'carry two weapons and have regenerating shields'. That said, unlike the newest Ace Combat, I seriously doubt that Mikami and his crew actually sat down and decided on having the Russians invading America for anything other than laughs. I mean, it's not as hammy as Metal Wolf Chaos, but it seems fairly obviously squared away in that 'parody of Americans' area of Japanese media.

Aside from the MANLY dialogue, I'm fucking amazed his main weapon isn't a sword. Though he did 64 Ultra combo + Shoryuken on a critter's head.

Anyways, I'll wait until one day I'm bored and it's in the five dollar bin.

While I suppose he seems like the kind of guy who could have a sword, for better or worse this basically is Gears of War mating with Devil May Cry. It's still a cover shooter, just with more rocket sliding.

Which funnily enough lessens it for me. Devil May Cry and the ilk is all about stupid stunts and absurd combat. This has some of the absurd combat certainly, but grounding it with the GoW style makes it look like they went "ULTRA KIENTIC STYLORZ!!!!...but you only on the ground. None of that unrealistic airshit, yo!".

Really, that had to be the first reaction. It wasn't as fun to watch as DMC's overdone insanity.

Why not have an FPS set in the heat of an American Civil War, in which a Theocratic Racist group of Fascists in all but name and imagery seize control of the Southeastern states after conservatives bring about a second great depression, where you play as either a Northern Infantryman who is acting as a commando for in a campaign to Liberate California from these bastards or an Eurocorps soldier fighting up through Florida.

Game looks interesting enough. Though I'm already looking at Metroid: Other M, Halo Reach, Etrian Odyssey III, and possibly Valkyria Chronicals 2 over the next month and a half...
