Background static with microphone

Hello guys, I noticed that I have a lot of background static noise when using my microphone. I only have cheap microphones and I tried the couple other cheap mics I have access to but the static noise persisted.

I use the motherboard integrated sound for the mic. Can that be the problem? Would I need to get a sound card in order to get rid of the staticy background noise? I have a xtreme phase asus motherboard, any suggestions?

Or is it due to the cheap microphones?

Radio guy here.

There's a variety of issues.

Cheap microphones will be no.1. If you don't want static you want a broadcast quality mic with proper shielding. That'll cost a pretty penny.

I've also had some static issues due to onboard soundcards - intermittant static that comes on strong anytime the CPU is hauling guts, things like that.

Try a couple of tests to see if the static is coming from the sound card or the mic - record with the mic physically muted (if it has an onboard mute), things like that to see if you can find where in teh system the static is coming from.
