Vanilla Arkham Horror - campaign mode?

Evenin' all, appealing to those with more experience than I in the game and in balancing. We've got a posse into AA at the moment, just vanilla as I can't really afford the expansion packs right now. I was toying with trying to do some sort of campaign mode, where you keep the same characters and equipment, but with a different bad guy each time we play. There are existing campaign modes around, but they seem to all be designed for or depending on expansion packs, so I'm not sure what additional rules etc to keep and which to throw out.

For those who've played enough to know, any ideas for making a campaign play with a feeling of 'continuity' and consequences, both good and bad, carrying over from game to game, but at the same time not screwing with balance too much?

You'll have a bastard with balance, because late-game AH is already really easy. You'll want to link other elements instead of equipment.

There are a recommended set of rules for campaign mode at the maker's forum, IIRC, those seemed to work fairly well for the 'campaign' my friends ran.
