Computer Problems

My computer is currently having problems. Specifically, Windows Explorer is having problems. About every twenty seconds or so, a window pops up saying, "Windows Explorer has stopped working. Windows is checking for a solution to the problem." Then, it switches to say, "Windows Explorer is restarting..." then explorer shuts down, then restarts. Anyone have any idea why it's doing this? I'm scanning for viruses and malware right now, but another opinion would be appreciated.

Edit: My scan was completed, and it found 2 trojans, (AVG internet security, if anyone's interested,) which were quickly cleaned up. Despite this, the errors continue, and upon actually counting, it stops working every 15 seconds, precisely. And yes, I restarted my computer after the scan - still doing it. Please help, I can't really do much with this computer when this keeps happening.

Back up your data onto an external hard drive, nuke the machine and reinstall. That way you can be sure that whatever it is is gone. A pain in the arse, but if you don't know enough about computers to start deep cleaning with various tools, this will also be the quickest way fix it.

If you're running Windows XP, I would recommend using either Avira or MS Security Essentials as your antivirus software. I've also run Spybot Search & Destroy and Spywareblaster as additional passive protection and haven't seen an infection in years.
