Just Started EVE Online, Any Tips?

Basically what the title said. I just started playing EVE as a Caldari named James Baerne, but the learning curve is a bit... steep. More of a cliff, really.

Anyways, I remembered seeing a few EVE-related threads here and thought I'd ask if anybody had any tips that might keep me alive long enough to get myself killed doing something interesting. Thanks in advance!

Quit.

Seriously though, what are you playing as specifically? Miner, combat? My advice is basically to find a corp (Coffee could probably help with that) and run missions to build up standing.

If you didn't skip the tutorials you'll know how combat and trade work and have some money. Choose something to do (ps not mining) and do it. Meet people and do it with them for more lols.

The quickest way to make some startup cash is to run a few missions in a Merlin, then buying a Caracal and fitting it with heavy missile launchers. Tailor your ammo and shield resistance against the enemy you expect to meet in level 2 missions. Work up the money to buy a Drake and run some level 3's. At that point once you've amassed some 30-50 mil odd pocket money, you'll be ready to start figuring real corps to join for fun and profit.

For your own sake, join a corp. Eve online can be a very boring game. It's the corp your in that can make it enjoyable. Even doing a boring ass mining op can be fun if your shooting the shit with friends over vent.

If you don't join a corp, or if you join one that isn't that active, you will quickly lose interest in the game.

Nephtys is correct, though I'd actually recommend a Caracal with assault missile launchers for level 2s, since that's mostly frigates and destroyers, but it's personal preference. Get a Drake for ezmode level 3 missions, which will require heavy missiles.

Also, what Temjin said. Find a corp -- which can be tough -- because EVE is very much a grindfest. Missions, even "higher-level" ones, get boring fast once you figure out what you're doing. Mining is even worse, and is minimally profitable, particularly at low skill levels.

When I get home I'll try to remember to contact you in-game with some useful websites, or you can do some Google-fu for "EVE Mission reports" and "EVE damage types," which will make missioning for income considerably easier. The Mission Reports site is overkill for level 1-2 missions but is useful when you're getting into tougher missions because it tells you what kind of damage the enemy is going to do, what ships trigger additional waves, and what kind of damage the enemy ships are weak against. Caldari are good because you can tailor your missile loadout on a lot of their ships to take full advantage of enemy weaknesses.

Do the tutorials, even the boring ones. The Astrometrics tutorial is a lot better if you skill up astrometrics to 2 rather than leave it at 1, imo. Astrometrics can be a good money-maker once you get your skills up (both astro and combat skills).

I hang out in a channel called "Mentors!" that has some very experienced and helpful players in it, so that's a good place to go to get questions answered if the standard rookie channel is too insane (or stupid).

I'm usually on as Aledris Toramas or Jaeris Telorn -- I can't help you much with finding a corp since I'm in one with a RL friend of mine that's not much more than a tax shelter for our characters (and am looking into finding us a "real" corp to join with little luck), but I'm happy to answer other questions and I've got some experience with Caldari ships.

Look up EVEmon (helps with planning skills) and EVE fitting tool (helps with planning ships).

I recently came back to EVE, at least for a couple of months - that sale was just too tempting.
I think my old corp imploded - don't suppose there's any kind of SDN corp around?

Nope. Tried to get one started a couple years ago but either everyone quit the game or they were already in other corps/alliances.

Thanks, everybody! Corp-hunting has begun, as has missile practice.

Also, in a startlingly good piece of luck, a friend turned out to have left EVE just as I entered it and now I've got a paid account with a bit of time left on it. Hurrah for not having to spend money!

What would be the benefit of an 'SDN corp' anyway? EVE corps are a bit more involved than regular guilds (ie chatrooms) and you can talk to whoever you want whenever. The SDN guys will probably be able to help anyone with decent skills find a place.

Pretty much. It'd be better to get in with an established corp/alliance that has things like training and ship replacement programs in place. I'd say come on over to my corp, but we've got a minimum SP limit and we're only really hiring PvP pilots right now.

Yeah, I'm not exactly a useful asset right now. Thanks for the thought, anyway.

If ya want I'll ask around and see if there's anyone that's playing training corp in our alliance/coalition.

I'd appreciate that.

EDIT: Character's called Sabrecap now - I made a new one on my friend's old account. Just in case it comes up...
