DC Universe MMO

This came out last week and I havnt see much relating to it. Has anyone played it, thinks its great, thinks its terrable?
I'm considering getting it, I'm quite a DC fan but I'm not sure I can support 2 ongoing MMO subscriptions based on the limited time I actually have to play them each week.
Anyone have an opinion?

I've been playing it a little, so the short version:
Everything it tries to do, Champions does better.
DCUO really only has two things going for it: Playable villains, and the big DC name so you can play your Batman copycat without getting your character deleted.
I could go into a lot more detail, but that really sums it up. Maybe I'm just peeved because SOE charged me twice for the game (silly me, it's SOE, I should have known they'd find some way to fuck me in the ass), but the game really isn't very good, especially when stacked up with the salient point of comparison, Champions Online. Champions has had time to mature, it's more interesting, has much, much stronger customization both in "costume" dress-up and the actual mechanical construction of superhero powersets, and to top it all off, is about to go Free-to-Play in about a week's time (brilliant timing on Cryptic's part; well played).
If you're a DC fan, then you might like DCUO, but otherwise go play Champs or CoH for your superhero fix. Or wait for the Marvel one, I guess.

I don't know, while it's no question Champs beats DCOU in terms of customisation (Both powers and costume wise) there are some areas where it's more like what Champs wanted to be then Chamsp turned out to be.
Such as the combat, it's far more action-y then anything else out there and there's defnatly no "Stick a power builder on Auto in order to gain power to use the moves you actually want to use" stuff going on there. So personally I'd say that if customisation were the game breaker for you go with Champs and City of, while if you want somthing different gameplay wise or are a DC fan go with DCOU.
It's hilarious that the given origin story for your character (Which was a neat touch I thought, if a bit railroding in terms of RP I suppose
) you can literally go with "<Insert Hero/Villian> Clone".

I am a long-time wow player with some Eve time also, this is my first foray into the superhero genre.
I got a buddy key from my brother in-law and have been playing for a few days.
Overall I like it, there are definite areas that need improving...the chat box is terribad.
In spite of all of this I am enjoying it a good deal.

I found the combat extraordinarily tedious. No matter what weapon you pick, you just spam generic melee attacks and generic ranged attacks. There's virtually no distinction between my rifle character and my sword character; their attacks just animate slightly differently. Attacks which seems to take 10, 15 or 20 hits to kill some mook.
But what really bothers me about it is that's there's no distinction between a melee or weapon-based superhero, and one who tends to use a more exotic powerset from range (be it fireballs, mind control, weather summoning or whatever). You pick a crappy weapon, and then you pick a "class" just like any other fantasy MMO, complete with two talent trees to focus on. And all of the "classes" seem to fall heavily into MMO archetypes (ranged DPS, healer, crowd control). And you have to have one, even if none of them fit your character in the slightest (e.g., a weapon-based hero).

Sounds like your typical MMO to me, where you don't actually have to be within your weapon's physical range of an enemy for it to do damage.

Sorry your not having fun with the combat system.
Personally I went Flight/Sorcery/Bow with my villain.
Flight is the transportation that I use the best.
Sorcery allows me to put a stun and dot on my target and heal myself if need be.
Bows are a slow weapon that has a early aoe knockback to give me some room if I need it.
I do have a spam ranged button on my N52 but to say that all I do is hold it down it's accurate.

The difference I found with DCUO is that it's actually possible to dodge attacks made against you by moving out of the way, regardless of how big your numbers are. It encourages jumping and leaping, and lets you jump and leap with some degree of freedom, and encourages much more active participation in your actions than most other MMO's.
I'm not saying it's worth money, but if you get a chance to try it out for free or something, then take a look. It's much better about keeping you on your toes than champions or CoH.

Avoiding attacks with motion if there's no penalty for backhits basically destroys combat; look at Conan.

It's hard to tell how much of this is sour grapes, but I started getting leery of this game right when they showed that intro video. I'm sorry, but killing off my favorite heroes in stupid ways to set off a brain-dead plot is not the way to get me interested in a game.

That's where most of my criticisim come from. I've never before felt so totally uninspired by a superhero game. If I were playing on PS3, no doubt I'd love it. On PC though, the DCUO beta got me thinking back to the days of WoW, CoH and CO, games that're actually fun to play.

in DCUO's defence, there's some good things. Acrobatics is pretty neat... and... uh... Wait, I'm sure there's... oh, right. I'd like some of those skin options in CO.

Ah yes, I forgot acrobatics. That did legitimately impress me. It's much cooler than the Champions counterpart (well, Champs has cool backflips that I don't think DCUO has). The wall-climbing, double-jumping, and ceiling slinking are all pretty awesome.

I just get annoyed by having to leave my piddly little engery builder on all the time, it just annoys me is all. Though given I neve rhad that high opinion of CO (Which I'll admit to) I suppose it could be my own bias saying DCOU (Which is by no means that good a game either, figure I'd best just establish that) is the slightly better.
And the combat did get a bit better in DCOU, for me at least, once I unlocked a few of the combos, just felt (Again to me here) a little more actiony then CO's 'Build power so that I can use the actually interesting attacks'.
