AvP Remake

So I got the AvP remake via Steam's holiday sale. Not sure if we covered it on the board other than in the context of "Aussie Classification board denies it classification".
I've only played about 20 minutes of the Marine SP Campaign and I am quite underwhelmed by it.
Cheap derivative storyline that consists of 'shout outs' to the good that came before it.
In the opening cinematic for the Marines, you meet a "Mr. Weyland" who just happens to look just like BISHOP. Likewise, there's a line over the radio that says "this is shaping up to be worse than the Acheron drop".
Additionally, there's also an incredibly contrived plot to separate you from the other Marines -- you get hit on the head during hostile re-entry by a huge container, so you get knocked out like Gorman.
You come to in a pile of your own vomit in a darkened station. Because apparently leaving people who have suffered a severe concussion alone with nothing but a pistol is now USCMC standard operating procedure while the rest of the gang goes along to get slaughtered investigate.
The icing on the derivative icing of fail is that apparently in the future, our bases and living quarters will be dimly lit.
It was at that point I basically gave up -- I don't feel like groping my way through the darkness looking for monster closets areas where Xenos bust through with a weak automatically replenishing flare and a flashlight on my weapon for company.
Didn't we do that in Doom3, and didn't that suck just as much then as it does now?
Also, darkness is such a great use of 15~ GB of textures.

Dude, Weyland is the template for Bishop. Of course he's going to look like him.

It's not a Remake of AvP, it's just the newest entry into the series and they decided not to call it AvP3. Bishop looks like Weyland, which was established in Alien 3 if I am not mistaken, and we also had Weyland in the first AvP movie, so um, yeah. Also yes, the marine campaign sucks. So does the Alien Campaign. The Predator campaign is the least-sucky of the three but is still not very good. AvP is a highly mediocre game all round.

Ha, except that....
"Lance Henriksen was involved as one of the characters of the game, he plays Karl Bishop Weyland (descendant of Charles Bishop Weyland)"
The chances that an umpteenth generation descendant looks almost exactly like C.B. Weyland is nil.
Honestly, I tried a couple more minutes and gave up when the game reverted to "lets party like it's 1999 all over again".
"Oh, hey there rookie; thanks for finding me and getting the power back up. Now we need you to go walk through the colony to this bar to meet up with the rest of the squad."
*walks*
"Oh wait, they're all dead. Oh and there's an alien swarm approaching your position; plus the elevators just went dead. Hold them off while I remotely fix those elevators."

Really man, who gives a fuck? AvP games being crap has been known for years, the first was the only decent one. So having Lance do a cameo as fan service isn't a big deal.

What did you expect? Everyone already knew it was shit, and it was pretty much always going to be shit. Are you objecting that a corridor stroller makes you walk down corridors?

I had loads of fun with AvP2 also, and there was a brief window of opportunity around when they announced this game that I thought it wouldn't suck. But then they showed gameplay at E3 and I knew it would blow.
Didn't we do that in Doom3, and didn't that suck just as much then as it does now?
No, in Doom 3 you had to choose between flashlight or firearm unless you installed a mod.

I was hoping that it would be a cheesy way to waste a few hours. But it doesn't even achieve that.

If you'd read my earlier posts, you'd notice that I'm objecting to the way it's just basically very 1999 gameplay wise with the plot all set up so that you always conviently either are left alone or are the only survivor of the squad(s) because you arrived just too late [TM].
On top of this everything is dark -- because Doom 3 was such a 'fun' experience -- let's make it even better by putting you in darkened corridors with enemies which are dark in color and terrors in HtH.

It's really no different structure-wise to most other mainstream corridor shooters. Do you play many shooters? Why would you compare AvP to 1999 when there are far more recent games with similar structure (like FEAR, for instance)?
That you're surprised an Alien vs Predator game is dark is, in particular, laughable.

The darkness of the original AvP's marine was great. Since you were okay in small areas, but when you into big wide open spaces, your piddly flares and NVGs just don't cut it when aliens are all over butchering you.

You know what?I have 2 giant gripes about AvP - #1, the ridiculously long kill animations that create a congo line of killing in MP matches. and #2..

Oh man the killing congo lines were a staple of the demo I played for it last year.
That and lots of lag drops.
As for the game, it was epitome of disposable cash-in titles. It's not even really worth a rent.

I got it on sale. In retrospect, I paid way too much. It runs like ass-burgers on my current PC, which is ridiculous - its simply unoptimised and its amazing how random the slowdowns are. And its just not very fun, all told. If it was, I would've finished it by now. Instead I just left it after a while. Too bad, really wanted to like it.

It's not as bad as Oneechanbara, but it's still a pretty awful game. I regret having rented it.

To be fair I don't usually buy games without doing research into them to figure out if they're good. But I've purchased a lot of games with middling reviews, and even knowing I wasn't getting a great game I still enjoyed them in some ways.
But this game was simply irredeemable.

Re-reading my post I think it looked as if I was critisizing you for being hyperbolic - I was not. I really DO want to see a boxquote of that
