Anyone playing Battlestar Online?

Post by DrMckay »

This Game is awesome. If you love Battlestar but hated the ending and all the God crap, if you love MMOs but hate Star Trek Online, if you love flying games, if you don't want to pay anything, (Impoverished college student...) this is the one for you!

Sorry to sound like an ad, but I just started this game and it's awesome. I'm currently flying a raptor with upgraded cannons and lots of missiles.

Give it a shot, it's totally worth it. The only danger is to my GPA...

Would if I could, but it required me to download some obscure program that only works on Windows or Macs.

It's free? I'll probably give it a spin when I have the time, then.

I was waiting to hear some feedback on it before I went to try it. Part of me is old-school and would have liked it set oBSG, not neoBSG, so that's also been a 'ehhh' selling point to me.

Okay...

The good:

- It's free.
- It uses sounds (awesome) and soundtracks from the series (awesomer) from the series
- Graphics and interface are pretty good,
-flight interface needs a bit to get the hang of
-Can mine asteroids for resources
-environments feel pulled from the show
-You can party up with friends and share points and loot from kills
-even my shitty computer can run it
-Did I Mention it's free?

The Bad:

-You are issued with a finite amount of cubits (money) with the only way to get more to by them, or possibly sell water you find in asteroids. This is how the developers make their money. Probably dont need to pay anything to find mnore though, I got some from some Raiders I blew up

-Need a good internet connection- It's a browser-based game, so you need a good connection. I don't have one, so I play at a friends'

-Flight controls can get frustrating at times, until you get the hang of it.

Not sure what you wanted for Ugly, hope this helps.

I'll add to this, since I gave it a go after seeing this thread. I lasted the tutorial and about a minute after designing my walkaround avatar before I quit.

The ugly:
-There is no move-backwards animation. Your character can only move forwards.
-You cannot jump.
-It looks great, for a browser based game. By which I mean it looks like something that crawled out of the depths of 2001 to haunt the living.

- dull
- boring
- frustating

About sums up the game. If it were not for the name "Battlestar Galactica" I doubt anyone would care.
I have to tell you something everything I wrote above is a lie.

Frustrating, definitely. And hunting through asteroid fields is bloody annoying. But the combat is pretty fun, I'm enjoying the flying around, and watching a cylon cruiser jump basically on top of your raptor is amazing. It's a pretty good, if quite basic game. But the amount of ship upgrades and stuff is very cool. Also, being able to fight in the raptor and not being stuck jumping if anything threatening comes your way is nice.
I wouldn't call it dull, but I also wouldn't say its a game you could play for hours. Maybe a couple of hours at a time at the most. Great to take a break on. Jump in, shoot down some raiders, drop out again, that the level its at right now pretty much. I'm hoping we'll see much more as it develops, but honestly i doubt it will.
Very much worth a try. If you enjoy it, great. If not, you haven't spent hours downloading it, or paid real money for it, so its all good, hey?
Go play it. Its fun, at least for a little while, and actually kinda pretty.

It's ok. Need a better 'net connection than the one I have.

Also, stuck on the mission in which I use a modified Raptor to mine asteroids and then end up facing three sentry drones in which I can only use missiles. Unfortunately, if they get within 200 (whatever the measurement for distance they use) I can't use the missiles and they pound the crap out of me.

How come you can only use missiles?
My raptor is modded for mining, and I still have an autocannon :?

Stop crawling up their asses and fly away until you can start missiling them or shoot them with the mining gun... it can still do damage to other ships

Game is a nice concept and has potential..

but...

I fucking dispise the MT model they seem to be pushing. Pay to get credits... which get you skills to train and level up... and can buy you special ships with enhanced stats.

Cosmetic items - fine
Entire ships / pay-to-leve - Completely unacceptable

No fucking way am I going to play a game where you actually have to pay to play and alot of the objects in this game require you to pay to get them.

Maybe some folks are going to be braindead enough to spend £20 just to get a new ship THEN another £50 to get the next and another £70 to get the skills / equipment to fly it. This is like EVE Online except instead of a subscrition you have to pay for every skill and ship.

Dont see this game working well if its going to continue to pull that shit. If the developers need cash then do a subscription but a game that requires people to pay large amounts of cash through nickle diming every item is just not worth playing.

When they showed up (at least in one occasion), they were within the 200 klick range and had a hard time boosting out of their missiles before turning around and hit them back. Kinda hard to evade when 4 missiles are aimed up your asscrack. :)

Finally reached it to rank 11 and got the Glaive Escort.

After a bit of playing the game is kinda fun when you get into the capitals but rather expensive. In theory the game is meant to promote a trump triangle between the classes but I dont see it happening.

Sure, a dozen Vipers can overwhelm someone in a big ship but the eventual proliferation of the big ships will make the smallers ships obsolete. Why get a dozen Vipers when you can just have the same folks inside the biggest ships available ?

Thus, you have the new players coming into a world where they get shot to shit by folks that are flying the heavy battlewagons.

That said, the Line ships dont thrill me much and the overall distinction between ship classes seems really poor.

In theory the Command class is meant to be some sort of Jammer / Buffer but neither is coming up to be really useful.
Your simply better going with the ship with the biggest amount of guns vs. power recharge and letting rip. Fortunatly the Glave is the best in the Escort category so I forsee myself stick in this ship for a good amount of time until I finally decide to try a Line Command Ship or they spruce the thing up.

Sadly, the game is repleat with problems and it seems the Cylons are getting the short end of the stick on the EU servers. Both servers have them getting completely raped by Colonials and you cannot delete a character once you pick a side. Once you make that character its there to stay and if that happens to be a side thats getting ass-raped to the point you cannot even spawn without dying... well thats your game completely over.

Certainly agree on the lack of distinction in the classes.
Either the command (buff/debuffer's) ships need much more energy and comp slots, or the buff/debuff systems need to have a much more visible effect. I chose a raptor so I could act as a support ship, but because of the lack of distinction I fly it as a fat slow viper. I've got an enemy weapon debuff module and a friendly buff module on-board, and they are near pointless, for the following reasons:
1) They have no visible effect, due too every round hitting anyway, though the stats say stuff like +2% accuracy. (At least it seems every round hits, the ones that miss pass through the enemy model, rather than actually missing, so you cannot actually tell how accurate you are being)
2) The range on them is ridiculous. The weapon buff is radiated to all friendlies... within 250 (assume metres). Consider that i regularly spend combat at ranges more like 400, and most of the time friendlies are nowhere near your arc of attack, instead being at 90 degrees or even opposite. The only time I could consistently buff an ally was when i was sat on top of a friendly line ship. Essentially the same problems with debuff modules.

Essentially, what they have released is shitty eve with new skins. It's all right, its good fun playing with a wing.... but for gods sake choose the combat ships, not the support ones.
(Note, i haven't tried out any engine mods, because they are expensive and seem to give minimal advantages.)
