Situation:
My wife's laptop has both wired and wireless capability. Or did, until the wired/lan plug died. It's about 1/2 an inch inside the main body of the laptop.

My wife is also sick of being 'wired' due to the dogs running around, and catching the internet cable. Yes, they are shielded, but she's still sick of it.

Anyway, to make a long story short - my wife wants to know if their is a device we can plug into our existing ethernet cabled lan that will let her use it wirelessly?

I'm also too cheap to upgrade to totally wireless at this time.

I can't think of anything other than a wireless router that'll do that, and I don't think they come in cheap versions, they just have a cheap bottom end. Unless I forget an entire product group, you're basically going to have to put on a wireless router to get a wireless connection and then you can just put as much stuff wireless as you want. However, the cheap routers are cheap.

What you want is called a "Wireless Access Point" or AP. You want something like this.

Or stop being a wussy and just buy a router that also has ethernet ports.

I didn't know you could get 'wired + unwired' routers.

I actually didn't realise it was possible to find a wireless router without an Ethernet jack or two; even the cheap piece-of-shit one NTL threw in with my landlady's broadband package had some.

We have access points in our office who don't have additional rj45 ports. Then again, they don't route, either. Actually, now that I think about it, many professional level APs don't have them, I guess since people aren't supposed to (be able to) touch them, anyways.
