Cloning a GPT disk

Post by Executor32 »

Long story short, my 320GB SATA2 boot disk is formatted using GPT, with a 100MB EFI System partition, 128MB Microsoft Reserved partition, and the rest as a basic data partition. This drive was only meant to be temporary, to be replaced with a 2TB SATA3 disk. What can I use to properly clone all the data onto the new drive? Free is infinitely preferable, since I'd rather not wait until payday to get this over and done with.

I'd wager System rescue CD has a tool that can clone your partitions to a new disk.

I'm sorry, but the number you have dialed is imaginary. Please rotate the phone by 90 degrees and try again.

I ended up not needing anything else. Before posting this topic, I had gotten a semi-working clone onto the new disk, but everything was broken because the boot partition was mapped to drive N: instead of C:. I suspect this is because the tool I used (O&O DiskImage trial) had done everything while Windows was still running, rather than rebooting and doing the task before Windows starts like Acronis (at least the free WD edition) does. A couple hours ago, I googled how to change the drive letter of the boot partition without being in Windows, and found that I simply had to edit the \DosDevices\*: registry key (where * is the drive letter you want to modify) under HKLM\SYSTEM\MountedDevices. I deleted the key for C:, which was pointing to the old drive, and changed N: to C:. Lo and behold, sweet functionality! Thanks for the suggestion, though.
