Actually they did meet up post Atkinson, but then threw out the Commonwealth AGs big pile of research showing 98% in favour/dreadful uncaring about the matter and only 2% opposed because they needed further consultation with their community and cabinet.

In other words, religious lobby groups are more effective at arranging voting blocs so they will never piss them off.
