RIFT early release

Post by dragon »

Well open beta is over and early release is here. So far the game has been pretty fun, of course the servers were swamped all day. Not many bugs reported so far.

Am I slightly dumb for thinking that this was a revamp of Rifts, the RPG thing from the '80s? Cause that was kind of fun back in the day...
It's a strange world. Let's keep it that way.

Sadly, it's just an expensive WoW clone(to the point of mentioning their competitor in commercials), which whores itself on the fact that there's randomized rifts in time/space, sometimes tied to quests. So while you're hunting for the boar liver, a portal to Hell might open and make trouble for you. But.. That's about all.

this varies from the randomly-spawning minor rifts to the NPC armies that routinely launch massive attacks across entire zones, leading to the spontaneous formation of multiple 20-30 member raid groups groups that must scramble across the map to suppress simultaneous invading armies

It should be noted, it's a very good WoW-Clone as in they did their homework and copied nearly everything that made WoW good, put together a new plot and new setting (Kind of) and ran with it.

The central conflict between time traveling Defiant who have seen the future and know the Guardians are going to lose their war without the power of SCIENCE! And the faithful Guardians who are lets face it, smug self assured zealot assholes brought back to life by the gods to fight the big bad who while firmly committed to the cause of good, are so intolerant as to doom the human/dward/elf/blue elf/blue human races to non-existent. If they had done a lot more with that setting and fused it into most every quest line the Beta could have held my interest but the problem was they got a great setting but then did very little with it outside the intro storyline quests. If this MMO was a great narrative that used WoW mechanics it could have gotten my money.

Instead it's a very good WoW fan made expansion pact.
Also horse should not be a fucking 60% speed boost over walking, it's a damn horse, why did you copy that shit from WoW? Come on now if running speed is 9 MpH in game then give me a damn 30 MpH horse not a 20 MpH horse. I don't mind the bat/gryphon rides in WoW because they were over pretty landscapes and they could be skipped via magical means but going outside the bus routes took ten minutes of my time. Thank you but no, I'm tired of that kind of time sink so why did you copy if Rifts?

No, I'm holding back on Rifts, Knights of the Old Republic, TERA and Guildwars 2 are the only MMO's who might get my money anytime soon.

Thats one of the issues since WOW set the standard every new MMO is compared to it as a WOW clone. Despite the fact the WOW copied alot of stuff from earlier games.

Yes WoW copied lots of stuff but it also improved on nearly all of it. I've played EQ, AO, DAoC, UO and the other first and second gen MMO's so I know what got copied from where. But lots of the RIFT coping was done without improvement. WoW has daily quests to get good gear, well then we will take those quests, run them through a thesaurus and make them our quests!
