Modern Warfare 3 to Feature Bigger Story, More Destruction This Fall

Brian Crecente — While still unannounced, sources who have seen the game in action tell Kotaku that the next Call of Duty will be a Modern Warfare 3 that pushes the bar on what people have come to expect from the series. And it hits this fall.

The yet-to-be announced sequel is under development by Infinity Ward, though a swath of those developers left the company in a civil-litigation uprising last year. The team is being assisted by newly minted Activision studio Sledgehammer Games, we're told. We've also heard that Raven Software may be involved.

The Call of Duty series has long alternated between two sets of stories and timelines. The games made by Treyarch have typically been set during the events of World War II, though last year's Call of Duty: Black Ops moved the setting to the Cold War of the 1960s. Starting with 2007's Modern Warfare, Infinity Ward's Call of Duties all took place in a modern day setting.

In the original Modern Warfare, a civil war breaks out in the Russia of 2011. The story continues in Modern Warfare 2, which has a terrorist attack in Russia erroneously linked to the United States. That leads Russian forces to invade the U.S. Some of the missions even feature rolling ground combat in the Washington, D.C. suburbs of Virginia and in the capital itself.

Key to the near ending of Modern Warfare 2, was the detonation of a nuclear missile in the upper atmosphere above the Mid-Atlantic, something that creates an electromagnetic pulse that destroyed all electronic equipment on both sides of the raging war in D.C. Such an event would cripple the area in the short term, essentially removing the ability to use most technology in the region as the country tries to rebuild or bring in support from other parts of the country. It also seems that it could make the story a hard one to follow in a modern day shooter.

But our sources tell us Modern Warfare 3 will continue along that storyline, delivering a "world in crisis" feel to the aftermath of the U.S. invasion. However, it looks like it won't be another take on Red Dawn, a post-U.S. invasion storyline already explored by Homefront. While it's unclear where specifically the game will be set, Modern Warfare 3 will have a urban setting, much like the U.S. missions in Modern Warfare 2, with military vehicles, including tanks, rolling through suburban streets.

The story may also include prominent characters from Modern Warfare 2, like Captain John "Soap" MacTavish and Captain John Price. Modern Warfare 2 ended with Price, Soap and a Russian informant codenamed Nikolai on the run as international fugitives following their killing of Lieutenant General Shepherd.

The biggest shift for the game appears to be in its breadth. We're told that Modern Warfare 3 will take place on a much larger, epic scale. It appears the game will explore the lead up to a blossoming set of engagements that could pull in other countries, creating a potential World War III scenario. The game will also feature large, urban destructible environments.

The focus on larger maps and destructible environments brings to mind competitor Electronic Arts' Battlefield series which made a name for itself with those two keystones. Battlefield 3 is also set for a 2011 fall release, meaning the two games could in theory be vying directly with one another for gamers' attention. Battlefield 3, as shown by EA in previous events this year, will take place in a modern setting and feature large maps and destructible environments.

We expect to hear more about the Call of Duty series and Modern Warfare 3 this summer during the annual E3 trade show.

We've contacted Activision for comment on this story and will update when we hear back.
Hey Phil? What makes Call of Duty so successful?
Well Ted it's the...
Oh you know already? Good good, I want you to rip all of that shit off and put that in Battlefield 3
Meanwhile
Hey Steve, what do people love about the Battlefield series?
Well...
Never mind Steve just find out what people love about Battlefield series and jam that shit into Modern Warefare.

Irony, BF3 single player is trying to ape everything from Modern Warefare from quick time invents and big giant set pieces to gritty emotional moments, meanwhile the Modern warefare team is off trying to rip off combined arm battles and the sprawling combat feeling from Battlefield.

Not really ironic. They're competiting for the same market audience while they all still were in the early WW2 era.

What's missing is only a Medal of Honour game to come and rip off both other franchises.

Did you miss Medal of Honor recently? It had (Or tried) to have Modern Warfare's single player (And failed) and they out right had the DICE guy's build their Multiplayer engine (Except their maps sucked)

The thing was Battlefield invented it's own audience with Battlefield 1942 or rather re-invented the old Battlezone/Tribes style massive area vehicle/infantry combat arena and added airpower to it. Modern Warefare was always after the single player market while Battefield was after the multiplayer market. Eventually CoD4:Modern Warefare went after the Halo style multiplayer matches while Bad Companywas trying (And failing) to capture Call of Duty style single player stories. Then of course came MoW2 when the team all took crazy pills to come up with new story elements witness Bad Company 2 attempt to copy it (And failing since the only thing Bad Company had was humor and they cut 99% of that out)

However I'm interested to see if we do get another Medal of Honor style game if only because MW3 is missing half of design team brains after the MW2 debacle. You know everyone's going to be watching if MW3 is just okay or even bad we could see another Guitar Hero style mass studio axing.

"We're told that Modern Warfare 3 will take place on a much larger, epic scale."

Great, because it wasn't stupidly "epic" before.

They should just hire Bay to do a movie and release the multiplayer component as the game itself.

Calling CoD single player a game is getting harder when the game basically plays itself. I don't recall making a single decision in any of the CoD series that altered the flow of the game. You got infinite spawning badguys, invincible named characters who can not die for sake of plot and scripted events dictating everything. All you have to do is press W key to move forward and play the role of spectator. Don't let the fact that you have a gun that shoots bullets fool you. You are really a cameraman filming the action going on than an active participant.

Its basically an interactive movie already. So why bother straining people with annoying cheating AI when we can just watch the explosions (which CoD story really is about) comfortably in theatres or bluray ?

Hey shit for brains. Not every game has to have a branching campaign and dialogue trees.

Sometimes monster closets helicopters and corridors city streets are awesome.

But hey, I guess all those people who buy it are wrong.

I mean, I played the whole CoD series for the SP.

OH SHIT.

Well we have to agree to disagree then. Different people different taste in games I guess. :)

When I saw the thread title I was expecting sometihng like "MW3 to feature OBL as antagonist..."

And, for the love of God don't let Bay here that suggestion. It would be a crime against humanity. I'd rather have a game with a shitty plot than a film.

They're already still doing the movie apparently, just with the director of The Hurt Locker instead of Michael Bay...

NOTE: I preferred Black Ops' campaign to Modern Warfare 2's.
