I fucked up Intel Integrated graphics

Post by Phantasee »

So I did two things: I rotated my monitor by 90° and then changed the resolution. I can't tell you why I did this, but I can tell you that my monitor doesn't work anymore. I get an "Out of range" message from the monitor and a blackout.

I tried the following: booting into safe mode, uninstalling the intel graphics driver, rebooting and reinstalling the graphics driver. As soon as I restarted from that I had the same problem again.

What do I need to do to make sure the settings for the graphics driver are reset with a fresh install?

Notes: I am on WinXP Pro, it's a Compaq, my regular resolution is 1680x1050. Anything else you need to know?

Boot with F8 but choose Enable VGA Mode. This will squash any user display settings and boot you up at 640x480x60Hz, which should allow you to set a usable resolution.

F8 doesn't do anything afaik, F10 is the key to get into the Safe Mode option screen. I get five options: Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking, Safe Mode with Command Prompt, Last Known Good Settings, Start Windows Normally.

Where would this option be?

there should be an option like "show more options".

I can't remember why some options show up and some don't, but you can run msconfig and add the /basevideo switch in the boot.ini file to force it.

I had to use MSCONFIG to get that option.

So now I just set a new resolution and I'm good? Screen isn't rotated anymore which is nice.

Okay so I am back in normal mode and everything, except I can't find my regular resolution anymore. There's options that go way higher than my computer or monitor can handle (2k something) and the closest to 1680*1050 is 1600*1200. Previously my screen resolution slider only let me go up to the 1680*1050, which is something of a limit for my computer, and the native resolution of my monitor.

F8's been the standard Windows Advanced Options button since the dawn of time (well, at least Windows 95). Your OEM might have been "helpful" and put another function on it though, and you have to be fast pressing it. You can also get the full menu by pressing F5 to force the OS choices menu and then F8 on your install of Windows.

The menu you were getting is the one for improper shutdown. The full version also has the option for VGA mode, enable boot logging, enable debugging, and on some versions directory services restore mode.

Anyway, if your available resolutions have changed check your VGA driver and monitor driver if you have one loaded (and aren't just using the basic plu & play autodetect), something's not picking up the plug & play settings of your monitor properly. Try downloading and installing the driver from your oem or from intel.

I have the most up to date* video driver installed now, still no dice. As far as I can tell the monitor is "Default Monitor" which may be the issue, but as far as I can tell, the manufacturer went out of business in 2009, and the monitor is supposed to be PnP. :\

*Apparently Intel stopped supporting the chipset back in 2005. :/
