Eve Online Historical Parallels

From high school history class, I recall that it was stated that the pre-world war 1 Germans wanted to ally themselves with the British. The author noted that they went about this in a odd way, by strengthening their navy and being a general thorn on Britain's side. They did this because they hoped that it would make the British realize how much they needed Germany as an ally. Suffice to say, it didn't work this way.
Interestingly enough, in the game of Eve online, this seems to be common in null-sec politics. Often times, before you are able to talk to the current null sec resident alliances and coalitions, you have to prove yourself. This often means actually attacking those who'd you like to align with in order to demonstrate your strength and that it would be beneficial to have you as a friend as opposed to an enemy.
Does anyone else find this interesting how the game parallels life and what we considered 'odd behavior' in an academic book?
Does anyone else have any interesting tidbits?
