Game wont install

After reading the Medieval Total War thread, I got the urge to re-install (love that game, one day I may even finish one); it only got uninstalled due to a lack of hard drive space.
So I installed a slave drive, (and then replaced a defective data cable), and went to install, and nearly through the first disk it stopped with some read error (Redundancy error, I think? If it's important, I'll check). Cleaned the disk and tried again, and same thing happened. Installed another dvd drive (since it's given me trouble in the past), cleaned the disk again and tried again. Same exact thing.
I think it's the disk. There's nothing hideous on it, but it's got the typical wear and tear of being much-loved.
Has anyone got any suggestions? If the game's gone with no decent recourse, I wont be happy.

Try to image it first; use UltraISO or whatever. It might take a while if the disk is damaged, but it won't give up as quickly as the file copy would, and it should work if the disk isn't obviously fucked.

Are you trying to install MW 1 or 2?

MTW 2. Gold edition.
Thanks Stark. I'll give it a try.

I should finish up this.
I couldn't copy the disk, neither alcohol, ultraiso, nor imgburn could read it, but by the time I had finished that lot it was Monday, so I took the disk to VideoEzy who have a disk polishing service, and for $3 they buffed it up so's my drive could read it. So a happy ending.
I'm currently swearing at the bloody pope.

Bah, just sack Rome. That should shut him up. By the way, if you really want a good time, download the Stainless Steel mod. Pretty much pushes everything to the limits of the M2TW engine.
I had a similar problem a few years back, and eventually it just worked and the problem never arose again. No idea what the problem was in the first place, but I'm not complaining.

I had a similar problem with Rome and I took the disk out then put it back in when it asked where the disk was. It actually worked. Might be worth a try in the future.

Even when I'm not particularly crazy about steam or other digital services (I'm fine with direct to drive), the prevention of this kind of things is one of their advantages.

Most people just image their disks, and the torrent cloud provides backups for any disk anyway.

Pope got you down? Realise the truth that there is no God but Allah and smash the unwashed heathen in their little backwards sub-continent.
