check this out - I'll totally just tl;dr it.
Reviews are wrong, this game is awesome. Play it. Play it with friends. It has universal appeal. It's crazy, Polish and racist and hilarious and there is a plane crash.
Done.

I tried the game out on my brother's computer.
The best way I can summarize it is "Diablo with l4d thrown atop of it".
It can be fun with friends, certainly, but as far as SP, it's a long grindquest with the only enemies being zombies.

There are enemies what are not zmobies.
You need to play more.

Also diablo w/ L4D on top = you just described Borderlands only with zombies (Which is a more apt comparison)

I actually like it. I just don't like the Infected and Thugs.

I did fight one human guy, but so far I only fought a varitaion of a zombie that did massive damage. He was called "thug" or something similar, I think.

Does it make much difference?
The basic gameplay is that of Diablo, except for the lack of random-generated dungeons (and also DI has scaling difficulty). You fight randomly-spawned enemies, have to collect a shitton of weapons which you constantly have to micromanage, you solve quests in an open-world for XP and items (sometimes money) for random people in "safe" areas that are otherwise surrounded by monsters and also have to constantly repair and change your weapons.
Yes, there are no "magic" abilities (unless you consider Fury to be that) or "magic" items like in Diablo, as well as many other minor differences, but the basic way you play remains the same.
You need to play more.
I stopped playing for the same reason I stopped playing Diablo: I grew bored of doing the same thing over and over.
I'm not saying that it's a bad game. It's certainly gratifying and combat can be fun (if a bit repetitive for me), I just didn't like it very much.

The basic gameplay is that of diablo except you have no skill bar, you don't hold left click to attack, game is first person, etc? The suggestion appears on it's face to be retarded. They both have hit points, I guess?
Ps we use the same weapons all the time. If you're not OCD it's not hard; just stop picking shit up for +1 damage. It takes 5-10 levels for a weapon to become useless anyway.
And runners are awesome. No danger at all solo, their speed and ability to interrupt the use of larger weapons makes them impossible to ignore. 4-5 of them in a group is always a threat, especially sine nobody ever gets giant kegs of health.
Chafes, talking about Borderlands might be a little advanced.

Snagged my 150th kill using analog. switched to digital combat and man does it ever make dealing with thugs easier.
There's few things more hilarious than watching those musclebound idiots flail their crippled arms uselessly while they try to bite you.
"What was that? I didn't quite catch what you were saying; let me jut get a little closer so I can OH MY GOD, THERE'S A HAMMER EMBEDDED IN YOUR FACE! THAT LOOKED PAINFUL!"
"Oh, you have something more to say? Whoa, now, biting isn't nice, let me just introduce you to Mr. Baseball-bat-with-nails-in-it, oh, no, it appears you have now been killed. How sad for you. Well, I'll jsut take this here...wait a minute a level two blue broomstick? FFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUU *repeatedly stomp until corpse falls into pool*"
Well, that was cathartic.
Oh, and STRAK FU and Los for making me miss seeing the plane crash! (J/K I went back and saw it with Xian and her stupid high heels.)
How's the throwing guy working out? Lose any epic purples through the geometry yet?

I think analogue will become more useful later, because even the basic walkers are really tough at l34, and aiming might be useful. But it slows down your attacks too much for me. I think the controls would have worked both at the same time, without needing to switch.
The throwing guy appears to be more a sharps and guns guy; only his special is throwing (knives, like a real footballer). Everyone's rage might be better than Xian's.
It's a lol to look at reviews complaining about lack of bullets when the npc drop like 30 each and you can make your own about 30% through the game. I never found a shotgun, though. I love that l37 guys can die in a l1 hosts game if they fuck up, only slightly slower than the l1.
Los and I finished it yesterday, and while it's clear the latter half was never finished or polished it's a surprisingly long game - we've both clocked about 30 hours on characters, and we started ignoring side quests later on. Act 2 in the city is a very successful representation of how being surrounded by weak enemies at all times makes it really, really hard - at least in coop you can keep cars going all the time. Even if the guys in the back of a ute just see numbers and body arts fly past them.

Actually, regarding coops, the game puts games like Borderlands to shame. By simply not having the player end up with 100x more hitpoints than they start with (you start with 4 hearts and by level 30 have 9) they avoid that annoying coop shit whereby if you aren't exactly the same level as your partner you're either bored or unable to do anything or both. I was playing with Los's partner this morning, and I died to a level 2 walker because I wasn't paying attention - unlike Borderlands, where even 5 levels is enough to make the game utterly uninteresting. It's a drop-in coop game where you can actually drop-in without the expectation that you'll be bored.
The game sold out in a few days, which says something abotu Deep Silver sucking as a distributor and about the game selling pretty well. Unlike the Joystiq reviewer I was smart enough to select 'single player' isntead of 'cooperative' so I didn't get nagged, but there are HEAPS of people out there playing.

I'll share with the rest of whomever wants to read he story I related to stark, JSF, and Los.
I went to best buy to pick up my copy, and the attendant informed me that they'd only just unloaded the shipment about 30 minutes prior. I was surprised by this, but I was truly taken aback when he informed me that they'd been out since three days prior (maybe it was four, but whatever)
Best Buy had a midnight release opening for Resistance 3.
They sold out of Dead Island on that night.
I'll have more of this, please and thank you, Deep Silver/Techland.

Oh, I finally scored the curbstomp ability. It is awesome for saving your weapon durability, so you don't waste your weapon on single walkers. I personally save it for when I gots infected/thugs bashing on me. I know this has all been covered before, but man do weapons wear out quick in that game (even upgraded ones)
Also I need to cheese money - how do I do this?

The high durability weapons last for ages. Stop using knives! If you rotate through your weapons they all last longer and the repair costs are lower.
I have never run out of money so I have no idea how to get it fast. Turn in quests I guess? Cash registers? Selling weapons can make a bit if you've got space. Selling crafting shit is good, like phones etc. You've prolly got two sets of $1500 diamonds in there too.
Ps sherry started playing this morning and has the stomp ability. What HAVE you been doing?

Money magnet, uhh...that one blunt mastery thing to level 4, durability 1, annd....something else useless that I forget now. WHOOPS.

Los and I actually laughed at money skills because we've never runout. The patch might have changed some things. I went down survival first too, so I know howyou feel. Level 3 chests? What do you mean they don't actually have better shit?

OH OH, I got the 10% health regen per minute ability, too.
And Tackle, which is AWESOME(ly useless)
Well, I take that back, kinda, Tackle with knockdown is usefule for busting up groups of infected. Also, I don't have to futz around with the door breaking minigame anymore, I can just crash right through them. That's cool.
Except when you bust down a door to a room filled with zombies and WHOOPS NOW YOU ARE INSTANTLY IN THE MIDDLE OF THE GROUP, LOL

You mean the Sam B is better than everyone else forever ability?
I can't believe the internet says the blade chick is the best character. She gets a useless 'medikits work better' ability
How many medikits have YOU used?

2, and only to get progress towards the cheevo for it. (PS - see edit above)

The tackle is cool but was a bit glitchy before the patch. Maybe they fixed it? It's great for flooring a bunch of guys, but it flattens your battery pretty fast. Sam B's 'zombies stay KO'd for 6 seconds' thing is amazingly hilarious also.

I looked at that and thought meh, instantly. I'm definitely going for maintenance +30% durability, and probably something...else? Who knows.
One thing I will definitely not be getting is more fury abilities because a good idea to do is to pretend to be Brick from Borderlands when infected can interrupt every punch and you die in three hits, yeah?

It looks like when you're fully specced in fury it can be really good (like it lasts longer, does more damage, charges faster, heals you, etc) but its very dangerous, and 'more durability' and 'more criticals' is probably a better bet.

Sherry really likes this game.
But the city is probably too high-density for her. She's getting pretty frustrated.

It's probably a high voltage debilitating sugar knife, actually.
The best part is the detached arm on the bench there.

Well, if she keeps up like that, density isn't going to be a problem very long, ami right?
