what class would this be?

Post by The Yosemite Bear »

I had an idea for an AD&D character, and I was wondering how to do this.

A big damn Greek hero(ine)
yes, a descendant of the gods (or goddesses) and mortals who has special abilities depending on which of the pantheon your in good with. Like Apollo would give you prophetic visions, of questionable reliability (things come to pass just not the way you expect), Dianoisis might give a bonus to con, or a berzerk fury ability if female, Hera and Hectae will remain serious evil bitches, however they might bestow you some power with magic but there will be a price. Persephony or Hades might give you the ability to speak with dead/undead. etc.

Sounds mostly like a cleric to me, maybe a paladin.

Specialist Priest, maybe? (Or was that just a Forgotten Realms thing?)

Sounds like a Cleric with specific domains, or yes, maybe a variant paladin class. The abilities changing depending on the Pantheon is much like Cleric's domains wich grant special spells or spell like abilities at certain levels - ie, Kord god of Strength, grants abilities like Enlarge Person, or an ability that grants you a strength bonus equal to your cleric level for one round.

the original idea was a character who was Circe's daughter who left home to find Ulesses but had bonuses and penalties because of the influence of the Greek Gods, not magical prayers/spells but wierd innate abilities and curses based on who was pissed off or pleased.

Something occurred to me. One of the 3.5 sourcebooks, Deities and Demigods, had a bunch of gods from Greek, Egyptian, and Norse pantheons. I AM A HUGE IDIOT WHO DOES NOT READ BOARD RULES.

I thought I remember reading years ago about a demi-god "race" in 2.0, with innate abilities (which scaled with level) for the character. I don't see why a son/daughter of a deity would need to choose a specific class unless it conflicted with their parents ideals, but even then, I would assume it might only lead to a loss of innate abilities.

But, I don't recall any stories of Greek gods being able to take away their offspring's powers, so it's not like they're a priest. A son of Hades might have a knack for Necromancy (although Hades was always more neutral than evil, but not all Necromancers are evil anyway) or a son of Apollo might choose the Mystic Mage kit (and get even more bonuses).

Any powers they had would be a result of their lineage more so than of their class. After all, even if Hercules was a Mage, he'd still be strong enough to crush people with his bare hands.

I'd just stay away from making a class and have a "race" created with certain bonuses and penalties. Their God parent may get pissy and interfere with their lives if they start fucking things up, but they shouldn't be able to directly take away their powers (unless they happen to be a Paladin or Priest of said deity).

Still sounds just like a cleric. Blessings/curses. Who cares what they're called really. If they look like a spell effect, act like one and the character gets more of them in increasing power as time goes by then go the easy route and use the spells. Have the GM pick the "spells" and apply them when appropiate. Or give the player some control by telling who each "spell' is from but not what they specifically are.

But I'm lazy like that. Why bugger about with custom classes and rubbish when the original four are so generic.
