Android and iOS game recommendations

I have recently came to own both an iPad2 and a Galaxy S2. I thus declare myself neutral in the debate between the merits of Android vs iOS.

I seek now wisdom on games (free and/or paid) to get for either device. Where a game exists for both*, I'd pick which platform based on whether its suited to a short session while waiting for an appointment, or a longer session lounging on the couch and also if a small screen significantly hurts the experience.

Recommend away!

For the record, I already have KODP, Angry Birds, Plants versus Zombies, Robotek and Battleheart. Among others.

*If the game also exists for the PC, I'd consider it, especially if the size is fairly large.

Tower Raiders is pretty much the only tower defense game I've liked on Android so far. No idea if it's on iOS but since it has actual maps instead of just "totally empty field" it has more replayability to me.

On your iPad try Sentinel 3 and SpaceStation by Origin8. Both games are fun takes on the tower defense genre.

On both platforms Angry Birds is of course entertaining as well.

Highborn (both) for a good turn-based strategy game with great graphics and a snarky sense of humor. There's an HD version for the iPad.

Robot Wants Kitty (iOS) is a fun Metroidish platformer with excellent replayability if you get the Kitty Connect DLC addon.

Galaxy on Fire 2 (both) for a 3D space shooter/trader. The original is fun, but the sequel is bigger.

Words With Friends (both) so I can conquer you.

Download the OpenFeint GameChannel app too; that's a great portal for some good titles as well as free for a limited time type stuff.

ScummVM has an Android port, and Curse works well with it on my Droid 2. You can get it from their downloads section (under 'Older versions (unsupported)'), and you'll need to make sure you have 'Allow installation of non-Market applications' checked under Settings->Applications in order to install it. There's an iOS port, too, but don't I think it's in the App Store so you'd have to be jailbroken to install it.

Peggle is great on either platform, though on Android it's only available from the Amazon Appstore.

Burn the City is a great Angry Birds-esque game.

Death Worm and the Hungry Shark games are both fun 'swim/burrow around and eat shit to grow bigger' games that are kind of like updated versions of Snake.

Undercroft for iOS is pretty good, old style turn based RPG, I play it on my iPhone so not sure how it looks on the larger screen.

Highborn is amusing, I'd consider going for the full version. The potential is great for more of these sort of thing.

It occurs to me that master of Orion would be pretty spiffy on ios. It's even mostly slider based :)

Undercroft is a cool dungeon crawler, but it can get old pretty quick.

I got the original for free via OpenFeint's free app of the day thing they do. I enjoyed it so much I purchased additional chapters. A whole two dollars! Unthinkable.

Same thing with Robot Wants Kitty. I found it so replayable that I bought the builder tool so I could play fan levels.

Got Doom 2 RPG for iOS and so far it's pretty good. Much better than the actual version of Doom which, in my opinion, had pretty sucky controls.

I recently released a tower defense game on the Android market and I think it's pretty good. Since you are a fellow SDnetter I can let you have a free copy if you want.

I would also recommend you try the following games

Tank Hero (Android/iOS/Symbian) - A very good arcade tank game with beautiful 3D graphics. Android has a free to play version.

Robo Defense (Android only) - Very well known game and frankly deserves the hype. You must try it at least once.

N.OV.A (Android, iOS) - Amazing console quality shooter from Gameloft. Free to try for Android IIRC. You must try it because it has Halo 1 type graphics and gameplay on a mobile phone !

Zenonia 3 (Android, iOS) - I was never fond of FF type games but if you like them I think you will love this RPG. Android version is free to play.

Shadowgun (Android, iOS) - Best graphics on a mobile device. Give it a try !
