Battlefield 3

Going to a midnight launch tonight at my local Gamestop, the reviews have started dropping for Battlefield 3 and it looks that the Single Player while excellent has shit for story and there are hilarious AI bugs (Team-mate AI has been know to go Rambo on random walls for some reason). Mutli-player is still best in the business. Looking forward to confirm or deny that this evening. Who else is headed out in the next day or so to pick this up?
Fun fact:Battlefield 3 pre-orders which they stopped taking on Friday were at three and a quarter million. No word on what MW3's pre-orders are at but it beats the pants of of Black Ops's record of two odd million pre-orders which was crazy good back then.

Spoke to soon, got two more reviews read, both of which used the exact same word "mediocre" to describe the single player campaign, one added "with flashes of brilliance" the other just left it there. That is disappointing, say what happen to all those MW2 devs? Maybe Dice can use their money from BF3 to hire them in true call of duty fashion.

Yeah, Arthur Gies over on Joystiq effectively said anything AI related (campaign and co-op) was total balls and was progression by death/memorisation.

People care about the singleplayer?

Sure. The trailer looked interesting. Plus coop is all good.
Except they put in autistic aimbot AI.

Trailers are designed to look interesting. Besides, I don't put any stock into reviews. 'Oh this thing is mediocre and it sucks but we'll still give it 10/10 because that's what we're being paid to do.'

Arthur Gies' review:

And his thoughts on writing the battlefield 3 review:

He's a source I listen to.

And that means they are not allowed to have a decent singleplayer?

I always hated that argument.
"Well this series was never about x therefore you can't criticize them for not doing x correctly (in every single iteration). Its mainly about y." ~ Fatty nerd
We know its mainly about multiplayer, but they really did showcase single player often enough, so its not unreasonable to expect something a step above mediocre.

No, it means you getting butthurt over lame singleplayer is hilarious.

Butthurt huh? Do you have no sliding scale of disappointment Flagg? No the only thing I feel is disappointed that all my 60$ is buying an excellent multiplayer game only tied to a 9.99 third tier studio quality single player. It's disappointing because the trailers made it look some what interesting like the Bad Company 2 trailers which turned out rather less well.

People still think reviewers don't have that much impact on the games industry right?

It's a source I listen to.
All I want to hear is that the beta was some early build that actually really sucked and doesn't reflect the quality of the finished game. Because everything from the sound to the art to the map design to the UI was crap in the beta; playing the beta convinced everyone in Australia that maybe BF3 was going to suck.
Except Ando.

Not being part of our PC spergy derp BC2 sessions, you missed my endless bitching about how terrible that beta was.

LOL
Well I have no exposure to the media side of things, so I don't know if the beta was old or how 'people' felt about it or whatever. I assumed you'd be better informed about the actual state of the release game.
But my whole squad of BC2 freaks played the BF3 beta maybe three times and got bored. The wierd FOV and terrible HUD drove me off.
I did hear that apparently the game went gold only very recently?

Arthur Gies latest tweet.
there are already a ton of dudes on bf3 360 who have figured out how to aim and shoot through walls and geometry. awesome.
Anyhow later in the beta phase, when media folks playing the "release" builds started saying that the combat mechanics had been totally overhauled and it felt like BC2 again I had much of my hope restored.
But man. That beta just ate shit all day long.

The 360 beta was, IIRC, basically late-alpha code due to the delays of the microsoft certification process, and was more about server load testing and making sure the netcode worked in the real world than play balance testing.

Just got an email from Origin stating the release date for BF3 Limited Edition has been changed to Oct 24th. However, when I try to play I get stopped at the release date confirmation screen which tells me the game is set to release Oct 25th.

For my part, since the single-player is rubbish the chances of me ever buying this, at any price, just hit zero.

Midnight launches are much more fun in Florida because Gamestops are typically near bars, in Pensacola between bars.

Okay installing now, Bizarre issue number one
1. Put in DVD, hit install
2. Watch as game starts downloading from Origin instead of installing from CD
It's not like there's a button I did not hit, it's literally, CD run, enter code, then it starts download. So... yay for the two disk DVD's which... are decoration?
I dunno maybe they only work if you don't have your internet turned on?

Maybe it helps inflate the Origin numbers if they count that as a "sale."
