Hello all,
A friend of mine has decided he wants a board game for Christmas. He is a fan of games like Acension and Descent, but wants something that can be played in about an hour. He's also looking for something that can be played by 2 players and will be approachable enough that his non-supergeek housemates might not be scared away from it. I've barely gotten into modern board games myself, so does anyone have any suggestions?

Does he have Carcassone or Flux? Both are relatively simple games that work well with 2 players and are fairly approachable. I wouldn't ask except that he seems to favor the FFG-style board games.UCBooties wrote:Hello all,

Invited by the new age, the elegant Sailor Neptune!
I mean, how often am I to enter a game of riddles with the author, where they challenge me with some strange and confusing and distracting device, and I'm supposed to unravel it and go "I SEE WHAT YOU DID THERE" and take great personal satisfaction and pride in our mutual cleverness?

He recently got Flux and is very happy with it. I will take a look at Carcassone. Thanks for the suggestion.

I've had fun with Lost Cities the card game, it's a great gateway drug game that's approachable for everyone; also it's easily playable in an hour, people playing it for the first time can easily get 2 or 3 games into an hour. There are two versions of Lost Cities: a two player card game which I highly recommend, and a board game that plays up to four which I haven't played.
Cold War's another good little 2-player game. Also, visit Boardgamegeek.com they've got plenty of reviews on many different types of games.

I would suggest Infinite City - it can be played by 2 or more players and is pretty simple and fun.

You could also skim over The Big Thread of Board Games and see if anything we've mentioned jumps out. Granted, we get a little more in-depth there than you may want, but it could be helpful.
I second Lost Cities, by the way.
