This just in, Torchlight 2 to commit suicide.

Post by weemadando »

After their many, many delays - they've announced that their release date will be:

A month after the Diablo 3 launch.

Maybe they know something we don't about a massive anti-Blizzard backlash. But there we go.

Oh yeah. And they're AIMING for this launch window. It's their "ideal situation".

If you had said Torchlight 2, 31 days before Diablo's launch yes that would be genus as it's just the right time for those waiting to get their fix. But 31 days after Diablo's launch? Hell why not launch it same day for 100$ a pop if you want to make bad decisions.

Is it even coming out on consoles this time or will it be a year late for no reason again?

Urgh. This reminds me of when Warhammer Online came out just before WOW Lich King expansion did. They just had time to solve some server bugs before a mass exodus to WOW happened.

Don't think they've even got a console version planned yet. It's almost like they're afraid of money.

Im relaying this from a person more knowledgeable on the topic, but supposedly this is a deliberate move on T2 devs part. They believe T2 will be better than D3 and after a month, when people are either bored or disappointed by D3, they will flock to buy T2.

Again, Im only relaying this since I don't care about both D3 and T2.

That's pretty funny since mos people only played torchlight because D3 didn't exist. It wasn't really hey good, really boring, and no multi for no reason.

I know, I know - small developers making bad decisions. Who wants to bet on their forum there's a swell of 'Our face game will totally outsell the most anticipated q diabl of the decade - it even has MULTI now'?

That will be the snappiest of all "oh sfnvap!" moments. Since that is what I too expect will happen.

I guess then we'll know nerds really do just want the same thing over and over.

Thankfully I'm safe on consoles from the hilarity.

Wow, they must be confident as shit with a pair of adamantium balls banging around in their pants.

Still a foolish move on their part, I reckon, and despite the fact that I've already paid for ordering Diablo 3 (mostly because my friends got it), I'm actually rooting for Torchlight 2 ending up being the better game.
I guess we'll see.

It arguably doesn't even matter which is 'better'. The only way I see this not harming Torchlight is if Blizzard simply doesn't care (which is a solid possibility). The game can be as good as it wants; pitching it right after the high profile established competitor is just dumb, and almost chewing based on people on their forums saying IM IN THE BETA AND IT SUXXORS BECAUSE THEY CHANGED THINGS.

Meh, my wife will get both, and will play both. Torchlight's retailing for twenty bucks on Steam, and there is something to be said for a pricepoint a third of your closest competition.

Really? Because it sounds like the opposite problem - WAR was pushed out the door half-baked and full of bugs because they wanted to beat the competition out of the gate.

People dropping 20$ on Torchlight 2 is the only thing they need anyway. It's not like they're asking them to maintain a subscription. If people buy it and toy with it(both of them), whichever one they spend most of their time on, both companies get all the money they were hoping for anyway.

I don't think Torchlight 2 is going to compete with Diablo 3. It's insane to even think about it when you are some tiny new company and other guy is a titan like Acitivision-Blizzard or whatever they are called these days. On contrary timing the new release with Diablo 3 may increase sales. D3 will cause great spike in public interest in hack and slash type games which is highly beneficial for smaller companies making this type of games. At least that's my two cents.
I have to tell you something everything I wrote above is a lie.

For what it's worth, ARMA 2: Combined Operations is ranked higher on Steam's Top Sellers list than Torchlight 2 preorders... then again, as of this post it's ranked higher than everything except Max Payne 3 preorders.

I do believe though that "wanting to beat the competition out of the gate" is a bigger problem than publishing after the competition's had their chance to fall flat and for their disenchanted customers to look for a better alternative, particularly if you're looking for market share and have no real chance of "overtaking" said competition at that instance. I'm thinking of the Battlefield 3 release and post-release "support" here...

Since TL2 pre-orders include TL1 at the moment, I wonder how many impulse buys they got out of Diablo 3 launch-day server issues...

I mean, they would get TL1 in the time it takes to download. Depends on their internet connection.

So, Torchlight may end up getting the angry nerd demographic.

It was funny yesterday to see the number of comments from people going "fuck this, I'm going to play the Torchlight 2 beta."
