I recently got the update for BitTorrent, and since then the downloads have stopped working. Anybody have any ideas on how to fix it?

Use utorrent instead?

What do you mean 'don't work?' Can you scrape trackers? Connect to peers? Or is there just no throughput? Try opening a magnet link to see if your client can pull the information.

I try to open a torrent file off the net, and it fails to start downloading. The progress bar is completely red.

your ISP may be blocking the protocol or the port. Try downloading using another port.

I've tried switching ports already (it took me a while to find out how), but it did no good.
