Re: Apple Launching revolutionary new laptop design
Who is supposed to buy this thing?
People who want a tablet will buy a real one right away. People who want to do real work buy a laptop with a real keyboard instead of this oversized tablet. So it's actually completely useless and just one more of Apple's stupid marketing gimmicks to look cool.

Ok, I got fooled. It's a really well-made spoof. Thing is I really don't put Apple above releasing such shit, that's why I thought it's real.

Actually, I remember thinking the same thing when I first saw this video a year or so back; it's exactly the kind of thing Apple would do if they were an only very slightly exaggerated version of themselves.
There are hardly any excesses of the most crazed psychopath that cannot easily be duplicated by a normal kindly family man who just comes in to work every day and has a job to do.

If it were modern, it'd use Siri for everything. Clearly.
.. Actually there's an idea. It's not necessarily a good idea, but speech recognition could go a long way towards the annoyance of using a keyboardless tablet for some nice content consumption and then having to type something in (something I've never been much good at). Tablet interfaces can be pretty good for cleaning up a few errors in things you've already written, it's the writing that's the real killer.

I'm sure speech recognition software would work great in public where you have hundreds of potentially confusing sound inputs or in offices that don't want much in the way of loud noise.xthetenth wrote:If it were modern, it'd use Siri for everything. Clearly.

That's the sort of environment people are generally in when they use Siri on their iPhones, and everything that I've heard indicates that it works acceptably well in that sort of situation. Granted, I wouldn't want it as the sole means of controlling a tablet, laptop or anything else, but I could imagine it being very useful if the current version weren't crippled to the point of near-uselessness for users outside the US (though apparently that's being addressed in iOS 6).

Also using speech recognition as a means of input makes me feel like a douchebag. Like one of those people on the bus that won't shut the fuck up on their cellphone and talks really loudly.DaveJB wrote:That's the sort of environment people are generally in when they use Siri on their iPhones, and everything that I've heard indicates that it works acceptably well in that sort of situation. Would a voice-controlled computer be vulnerable to Rickrolls?
Re: Apple Launching revolutionary new laptop design
This is an apple product I'm talking about. Levity aside, sure there are times when it'd be less than optimal but the key advantages I see is that it requires only a microphone, and it's competing against a tablet keyboard, which is like polevaulting a hurdle. From what I've seen I'd rather type on a smartphone than a tablet because a smartphone is small enough to be fast with just thumbs and I never manage accuracy with a tablet using my hands.General Zod wrote:Also using speech recognition as a means of input makes me feel like a douchebag. Re: Apple Launching revolutionary new laptop design
Sounds like a personal problem to me. If you want to use thumbs just split the keyboard, but typing on a tablet just isn't a big deal.

Not to mention the video was dated several years ago, when Jobs was still alive.Lord Relvenous wrote:Steve Jobs presenting the product didn't trip any alarm bells?Tribun wrote:Ok, I got fooled.
