Have new Wii, looking for recomendations.

Post by Crossroads Inc. »

Recently my partner got a Wii for us.
He mostly got it for the party games and the motion sports games. Currently he is having a lot of fun with the marior party and such.

I However prefer more action-ish games...
So... Can anyone recomend any good Giant Robot games or good RPG's ?

Are we talking a Wii U or the old Wii?

Sorry should have mentioned type.
It is the Old Wii, figured there would be cheaper games and bigger library.

Well, the one problem with Nintendo games is they tend to retain their value surprisingly well. So pretty much anything worth playing is going to be over $30 still.

Meh that is understandable.
We do not plan on buying too many games really, just a few for now.
For me personally, just one or two Giant Robot games would be nice.

Other problem with Wii is a much smaller library of multiplatform titles since devs/publishers didn't want to have to downgrade the graphics. They apparently missed the fact that Wii sold half-again as many units as either the 360 or PS3...

Anyway. I've played the GameCube version of Twilight Princess, and the only diff between the versions was that they flipped the whole game left to right to make Link right-handed. Really damn good. My cousin Jack's got a couple arcade flight sims (Blazing Angels was one, don't remember the other).

If your definition of mecha games is broad enough to include powered armor (and hey, it worked for Super Robot Wars), there's always Metroid Prime Collection. In more traditional news, there's apparently a Sakura Wars game that came out in the US (how did that one slip past me?). Also, if you're interested in Virtual Console you can pick up Cybernator/Assault Suits Valken.

It's not "just" graphics. It's things like physics, NPC count, and AI performance. Eventually you begin to run into a wall with what you can do if you have to adapt a game to lower-end hardware.

It sold a load to people that wouldn't buy many of the games that you get on PS3/360.

Most people I know that own Wii's are not "gamers" who would play things like CoD, Final Fantasy or other big game series. They're in it for things like Wii Sports. It doesn't matter if the console has more users if a load of them aren't interested in your product. Those that are interested tend to own one of the other consoles.

Xenoblade Chronicles would seem to be a no-brainer. It's an RPG and you get to fight hordes of giant robots.

This is for the most part true with my partner.

Thus far he has really enjoyed all the "active" games. The Wii Sports, the resort game, the Mario party games...
Unfortunately the more I like, the less if Seem to find, at least for giant robots...

The older Giant robot game series..
Armored Core,
Zone of the Enders
Mech Warrior
Battle Tech.

So far all of these seem absent from the wii.
Someone mentioned that "Super Robot Taisen" are on the Wii though I have not found anywhere that sells it.
Also I remember "Front Mission" being on the Super Nintendo, I thought I had heard that they developed some games for the Wii as well, though thus far google searching does not seem to turn up anyplace where I can purchase the game.

Endless Ocean is a game that I just loved. Not being able to get underwater and dive regularly anymore, it was actually a nice exploratory game to just chill out in.

Super Robot Wars NEO was on the Wii iirc, though it wasn't a major title in the series.

My notes and recommendations:

Sakura Wars -- Surprisingly enjoyable, but keep in mind that it's a friendship/dating sim as much as it is a strategy game, if not more so.

Battalion Wars II (BWII) -- A fun little Action/Real Time Strategy Hybrid.

Xenoblade Chronicles -- I can't second this one enough.

Monster Hunter Tri -- This is a fun and challenging game, but you might have to get used to the character of the combat system first. It's not a dodge-and-combo system like a hack-n-clash game. Movements, attacks, and even using items have to be done a lot more deliberately.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl -- Fun Party Fighter for just about everybody.

Tatsunoko vs. Capcom -- I don't know how you feel about fighting games, but the engine for this is fairly accessible. Also, you get to play as Tekkaman Blade and one of the giant mechs from Lost Planet.

Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World -- You don't have to have played the Gamecube original (or any other of the "Tales" series) to get this game, though it helps. The game is fun, but it's a bit of an obvious side-story that probably could've stood a few more months of development time. All the same, the action-based combat system is just as good as ToS, and is worth a play in and of itself (especially if you've never played a Tales game before).

Wasn't there a Gundam game for the Wii? I think I saw a demo when I went to GameStop one time, though it might've been for the 360 or PS3.

There are a number of Gundam games for the Wii. Whether any of them were released outside of Japan is another matter.

PS3 is where most of the Gundams are, and the PS3/360 have many more giant robit games (Armoured Core and the like). Also, most Gundam games are toss so you probably shouldn't bother.

To be honest, there's not a great deal going for the Wii. If you're a JRPG fiend you can get Xenoblade Chronicles and The Last Story, but beyond that, errr.... err......

And you should get Metroid Prime Trilogy if you can find a copy.

And then buy a real console, which have all the same waggle and sports games as the Wii now, but also have real games as well.

Thirded.

Also if we're just making general recommendations, Rayman Origins, World of Goo and Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition are extremely fun, affordable games, though with the first two you're better off buying them on other systems.

Little King's Story. Really under appreciated RPG/RTS thing. Actually quite good looking even with Wii hardware.
