Gmail and Images

Post by Esquire »

Anybody else have this problem? A friend sent me some pictures, but they don't show up in the email - just the little generic image icon. When I click on that, it goes to a Temporary Error (404) page... I don't suppose anybody can help out?

Both email accounts involved are Gmail, and while I originally tried to use Chrome to open the email the same problem occurs in IE8 and Firefox. Also on different computers, which is frankly bizarre.

Paste. I had him try it as an attachment and the problem went away. Odd - none of the help threads I read mentioned that - but I'm certainly not complaining. Thanks!

I've seen this happen where Rich Text Formatting is not turned on in the Gmail account itself. The easiest way I know of to turn it on is to open your Gmail account and compose an email. Right above the message box you have the text modifiers. if RTF is OFF you will see Rich Text>> to the left of the modifiers. If you have RTF ON you will see << Plain Text to the right of the modifiers. If you see Rich Text>> click it. That will turn on RTF in any email you send or receive. Then you should be able to open the emails where the images were sent inline.

the other option would be he pasted the images in and accidentaly pressed the 'set email to plain text' button. - that might have screwed it up.

AFAIK, pasted images in gmail are shunted off to be stored on a google server, and can be downloaded via secure link in the email thumbnail. However it happened, the thumbnail links you received were broken, or possibly out of date (i'm not sure how high the security levels on those things are)
