Crusader Kings 2: The Old Gods expansion has been announced by Paradox Interactive.

Announced during the publisher's PdxCon event, it will be the fourth expansion to last year's hit strategy game adding playable Pagan and Zoroastrian rulers.

The new rulers will put a focus on Viking culture, with the ability to loot and pillage other provinces.

There will be a new start date in 867 AD, which sees the Viking Rurik founding the kingdom of Rus and leading an army through England.

The expansion will also give rebellions character leaders with their own agendas as well as landless adventurer characters that can gather armies on their own.

Invasions are another new feature, as players can declare their intention to invade a neighbour and allow adventurers and other warriors to join their army.

Crusader Kings 2: The Old Gods will be available on PC and Mac during the second quarter of 2013.
I wonder how much effort paradox is going to make in depicting the Byzantine Empire during this period.

Funny, that's the first thing that came to my mind. "How are the Byzantine's going to be treated?" I wasn't that happy with the somewhat minimalist treatment they got in LoR. My guess is not much, since Paradox doesn't change that much about the areas that aren't being focused on in new expansions, though this seems far more meaty than the usual.

Also I wonder if anything special will happen with Zoroastrians.

Those both sound great.

Definitely looking forward to this. I'd love to do a campaign with a stronger focus on the internecine conflicts for Britain (as opposed to the generally unified England and Scotland in most 1066-start games), so this sounds perfect.

I've been a little disappointed with some of the mechanics in Republic - embargo wars are just downright barmy - but if they can cherry-pick the good stuff like the family mansions and ability to play below the count level, I'm itching to get this new DLC.

I should note that one of the Devs on the forums has said the new 867 start is just a bookmark, you can't pick any date between then and 1066. As for myself, I'd like to see the autocephalous patriarchies fixed so that if I make the Russian Empire I don't have 4-5 different independent patriarchs (Russia, Rus, Ruthenia, Volga Bulgaria, and if you somehow manage to usurp or create it Perm) in my realm if I choose to delegate Kingdom titles out, I should have one single autocephalous Patriarch of Russia. a Kingdom should only have it's own patriarch if it's independent of some Empire. Hopefully this DLC will buff the pagans sufficiently that Denmark, Norway, Poland, and the HRE don't automatically overrun them all by 1100 and the Teutonic Order actually has a chance to gain some ground.
