Let Us Discuss Bungie's Destiny
So as I know nothing about Halo or other games Bungie has put out other than it and this new game Destiny are first person which sucks already.
I am interested in what XBOX Live showed with the integration of cell phones and social play that may effect the single player aspect into their game which should terrify FattyNerdsTM like it did with Mass Effect 3. I was curious if there was other info on stuff like this that they are attempting?
It looks like bog standard "You will save the human race that is on the brink of extinction with your specialness and powers" story wise, but the scope looks like it may be impressive and they are attempting MMO type multiple planet stuff on consoles.
So what's the skinny on all this?

It's 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark... and we're wearing sunglasses.

Re: Let Us Discuss Bungie's Destiny
I'm eager to see if they do more cross platform integration; even the Japanese are doing it now, which is the point at which your multiplayer feature has penetrated the most difficult markets.
I mean the game itself looks entirely like garbage and Bungie never made a game that didn't suck so who cares, but more multi and more platforms and more integration is always good.
Well, not for nerds maybe. :V

When they talked about the story I was rofllawfing.
"You play a super soldier who must save a space faring civilization from aliens."
We're really breaking new ground here I see.

If it uses async and other platforms for cross mojonation and community-driven heatmaps and shit, it could be interesting for those elements.

Re: Let Us Discuss Bungie's Destiny
Maybe. Bungie didn't acquit itself poorly with multi-player mechanics and community stuff in the later Halo games after all. I've already written off the fluff but that's nothing most people haven't done already i'm sure.
Best care anywhere.

It's not Halo you guys, you're being unfair! It's clearly a giant space SPHERE, not a ring world.
Can't wait to seen their new take on shitty copy and paste level design and swarming enemy that is terrible.

That aside, as I posted in the OP, the story /synopsis is already laughably been there done that, but as Stark touched on, it is the cross platform multi stuff that I am interested in.

How effective was Mass Effect 3 in that regard, Hav?
Re: Let Us Discuss Bungie's Destiny
I wasn't referring to ME3 in regards to the cross platform stuff, although I think they did an android game and a facebook game, I was referring to the terror that FattyNerdsTM expressed at having to get achievements and "the best ending" by being "forced" to play multiplayer in order to get it.
However, as I played ME3 for literally fucktons of hours, the fact that I never bothered to try those games on those platforms, I would say anecdotally that they were not effective in that regard at all.

Re: Let Us Discuss Bungie's Destiny
I don't care at all. I played some of Halo CE back when it first was out, hated it intensely, never bothered to play any further HALO games and never once was tempted to. They look terrible.
Destiny, on the other hand, only looks mediocre. I like their concept art a lot but their in-game stuff they showed zero inspiration. I know its early but don't show it if it looks shitty.
Bungie annoys me with their self-important hype but I'm entirely on-board for a good sci-fi shooter that isn't god-awful. However, I don't like Halo-esque gameplay so if this is like a Halo game then I'm just going to pass. Better yet, they might exempt me from it entirely because, shock of shocks, I don't have a smartphone. So I guess fuck me, right? I dunno, we'll see. I just don't give two shits about Halo, but I would be intrigued about a good game full of awesome exploration. However, I was really hoping not to be tasked with saving the world. I was hoping it was more of an adventure and less of a... I don't know, heroic journey.
Though, its called DESTINY, so I don't know. I was hoping for more of a giant safari world I suppose. I've not been given enough info to judge my reactions. I like the concept art, I don't like the stuff they've said. Not sure what to trust.

Is Myth what I think it is, ie that really clunky and horrible 'strategy' game? It is!
And mentioning Marathon isn't very wise, since Halo was just Marathon's Destiny. Do we really want to talk about how Bungie never had another idea?
I guess it's too much to expect anything but a drive by from cowards like Xissiqomelir.

Re: Let Us Discuss Bungie's Destiny
Well my luck, I guess, is that I never played Halo outside of the first game for literally a couple of hours with my friend, so I have no idea about that story or gameplay. It will at least be new to me if I decide to ignore the whole save humanity schtick.
It would be nice though if just once you could play as a nobody that has to actually build up to something instead of starting out as the savior of XYZ and you just have to access your powers by advancing a couple of levels.

Wasn't that the point of the first Call of Duty? Play as "one of the crowd" rather than some super-duper-soldier person.Havok wrote:It would be nice though if just once you could play as a nobody that has to actually build up to something instead of starting out as the savior of XYZ and you just have to access your powers by advancing a couple of levels.
Baltar: "I don't want to miss a moment of the last Battlestar's destruction!"
Centurion: "Sir, I really think you should look at the other Battlestar."
Baltar: "What are you babbling about other...it's impossible!"
Centurion: "No. It is a Battlestar."
Corrax Entry 7:17: So you walk eternally through the shadow realms, standing against evil where all others falter. May your thirst for retribution never quench, may the blood on your sword never dry, and may we never need you again.

Re: Let Us Discuss Bungie's Destiny
Have no idea. Never played Call of Duty, but knowing the genre of military shooter, and that they are patently different than sci-fi/space/fantasy games. That isn't surprising, but also the point I think.

Re: Let Us Discuss Bungie's Destiny
Well, when people throw out absolutes like "never", I think it matters.CaptHawkeye wrote:Both of which came out 20 years ago. Who cares?
The first successful 3D real-time squad game with full voice and effects, with a following sufficiently large and avid enough for Bungie to produce 2 sequels and leagueplay which went on for years after it went OOP. But yes, it's terrible according to Stark.Stark wrote:Is Myth what I think it is, ie that really clunky and horrible 'strategy' game? It is!
I don't see how this relates to your claim. The former series is superior in many ways (Durandal alone is probably better than all of Halo).Stark wrote:And mentioning Marathon isn't very wise, since Halo was just Marathon's Destiny.
I'm just disputing your claim that they never made a game that didn't suck. I don't disagree they're not as good as they were when they were non-console devs.Stark wrote:Do we really want to talk about how Bungie never had another idea?

Re: Let Us Discuss Bungie's Destiny
I'm intrigued from a technical perspective that they're unveiling this thing both for the PS4 and the PS3. How they're going to cram it into the PS3's notoriously cranky memory center is going to be really interesting, and I wonder if it'll be terrible on PS3 or actually decent.
I'm rather confused by the premise now, I did a google. They say this giant Traveller sphere floats above the last human city (so we're the humans? I thought we were special non-human guardians?) and wield some kind of power. Do we know what this power is? Are they going to throw in some kind of Science Magic thing?

Re: Let Us Discuss Bungie's Destiny
Myth = good because he played it, Halo = bad because console. Good thing we're not getti quality discussion here.
Cov, the answer is probably 'Sony gave them heaps of money' and 'will probably be dropped by release'. Since it seems it's just going to be the next failure of an MMO, ough, I'm not sure if it'd really pose a technical problem for PS3.

No, it really isn't.Xisiqomelir wrote:I don't see how this relates to your claim. The former series is superior in many ways (Durandal alone is probably better than all of Halo).
I've played Durandal and it's dull and unengaging, whilst it might have looked good at the time next to Doom it has aged worse because all the elements it added to the formula were actually really clunky and have been evolved in really good ways in basically everything else ever, and at least Doom is still relatively slick at its mazes and keys business.
Now, the original Halo hasn't aged terribly well either, but better so than Marathon.
Re: Let Us Discuss Bungie's Destiny
But it had consoles full of fascinating story! What he means is he likes it more than 'all of Halo', or possibly that terrible puzzles means it might take longer to finish than 'all of Halo'.
The Marathon Myth Making is kind of interesting, because most people I've met we're told the games were good before they played them (excepting a few actual 90s Mac owners) and them being good formed part of the Halo hype machine. The biggest thing people should have seen when looking at those two series is that Bungie never had another original idea.

Re: Let Us Discuss Bungie's Destiny
Ok, so please explain how Myth was so bad exactly, comparing it to its contemporaries and games that had come before. I'm genuinely curious, because from what I remember, it actually created a lot of the little advances that RTS gaming relied on from then on.Stark wrote:Myth = good because he played it, Halo = bad because console.
