So Steam updated today with trading cards and more

Post by Mr Bean »

Seriously first they add achivements ala-xbox and PS3. Then they added in the community section and groups that trump anything MS or Sony put out. Their instant messaging and meetup tools are inferior so far but lo and behold they've taken the idea of Gamer score and added onto it with broad based service achievements and some kind of mutant collectable card game.

Without doing anything I'm level ten and so far no free discounts or the like. So for now I'm going to ignore it. Unless Steam card turns into some sort of CCG in which case God help us all.

I traded my extra Sdkfz 251 halftrack card for a T-34/76 card.

I know right? I don't understand why I'm doing things or what I'm doing.

The cards let you craft badges which let you access new "Board Emoticons" or occasionally other little bells and whistles. Your player rank is basically just an indication of how many games you've played and how long.

There's something like... umm... I think 6-8 Cards per game. I can ask my Steam Rep, but for our game, I think it's just 6 cards, of which each player is going to get access to 3 of them on their own. They'll then be able to trade for the rest.

Basically, the entire thing is "pointless" but players like this kind of crap. It's like trying to get Platinum Trophies for your PS3 games. Does nothing but players are nonetheless motivated to achieve those things.

All the games that give trading cards.

Me, I'm going to be idling the games that give me cards. Then selling the duplicates on the Steam market. I'm not sure if I'll keep or sell the rest of them.

I find the duplicates really irritating. Still, I managed to snag myself the level one Skyrim badge through some wheeling and dealing.
