Alien vs Predator: Warcraft (WC3 mod in the works)

DPDarkPrimus and I have been working on this total conversion for WarCraft III for a while.

http://www.gameproc.com/forums/index.ph ... ct=SF&f=16

The project is dedicated to modifying WC3 (actually, The Frozen Throne, as we want to wait untill the expansion is out to take full advantage of its features) into an Aliens vs Predator mod. It has a much stronger emphasis on tactics and unit management (most units have 2-3 abilities each), and a simplified, more-flexible economy/tech-tree structure.

As you can see, it hasn't gotten past pre-production right now, but for a TC, it has more than enough details plotted out to start working on models and artwork.

Anywho, just thought I'd post the link to GameProc's forum on it, in case anyone is interested in seeing it, or possbily even working on it. Hell. if you are interested in working on a mod, check it out.

Being an avid Warcraft mapmaker, I must say cool. :D
Good luck with that.

Doesn't strike me as a very suitable game for the task.

Thing is, Warcraft is very easy to mod compared to other games. Even amatuer mapmakers can create some very nice maps.

Oh, and Darth, could you please inform me when this mod is done and where I can download it?

Hey, cool. And here I was expecting that people wouldn't be interested in it yet, Uts. I owe you a cookie.

...Hey, since it's sort of on topic... why don't I promote my SC campaign at the same time! It's even hosted on the same site! :P

EDIT: Whoa, past 1k posts! Darn, and I didn't even make a celebratory thread...

There's already an Alien vs. Predator conversion for Warcraft. It's called StarCraft.

Sounds interesting anyway.

Well, I'm assuming you're being sarcastic, but the design I came up with changes a lot of aspects of WarCraft III's gamepaly. It's kind of a mix between WC3, StarCraft, (actually I originally thought this up as a Starcraft mod), and some parts of 3rd-person tactical games.

It's going to take a long time to create the new models (I'm trying to convince Spanky to do some concept art), sound, and new abilities, but I'm going to do what I can to push this thing along (I'm also learning how to modify and detail textures and skins, but probably wont be able to create any of my own from scratch, so I'll need additional skinners).

Well, I just posted a recruitment thread on wc3camapigns. Hopefully, we'll see some skilled people joining up from that large modding board sometime soon, and get this project on its feet and rolling.

They're gonna get 'Foxed'

I've been around long enough to know when a AVP mod is gonna get the axe. Since this mod will possibly compete with Extinction, Fox aint gonna take any chances. These guys are gonna get shut down. It's just a matter of time till one of the major AVP sites posts something about it and Fox see's it and sends out their bloodsucking lawyers. I've seen it happen before, and it will happen again.

Wrong thread comrade

Hey, if Fox wants to change their plans and release Extinction on PC, I'd like to see them go right ahead. It's not even the same genre, and Extinction isn't multiplayer (and its design sucks, too. Too many damn mechs, no consistency with uniforms/armor), so I don't really care.

Well, I could try mapping a bit... Did so with Starcraft, and fooled with the WC3 Map Editor before too.

Oooh, I wanna be a beta tester! :D

*Buuuuuump* :D

Did some updates for my Overviews. Nothing too noteworthy except for the addition of the rest of the buildings (had them written down, but no sugar-coated descriptions).

Hell, Exonerate, if you want to help out with the pre-Frozen Throne Alpha test (porbably with just Colonial Marines, or as many units and abilities can be added w/o the expansion), I'll let you know when it's in a testable form...

...Just as soon as we find a fricken modeller!! :x :P

I'd also like to be a Beta Tester. My Contact details are at the bottom of the post.

Guys, i was looking over your units for the Xenomorphs a week back, and I'm hoping that you've made some plan changes. It looked to me like every Xenomorph unit was melee. You need some ranged attacks too, otherwise, it's going to be vastly imbalanced. Did you forget that they can spit acid too?

Xenomorphs move fast enough to get into melee range, and are cost effective enough to not only take the average damage sustained while moving to melee range, but have easilly 3-4 times as many individual units on the battlefield; greatly negating focus fire benefits taken by ranged units (particularly the Marines, which having all ranged units means they need several types of attacks that are Concussive and will hit multiple targets, hence the Incincerators and Smartgunner's ammo switching/A2 targetting).

So on the contrary, it'll will generally be the Xenomorphs that have the focus-fire benefits. My major concern is the armor/damage types balancing out, as many of their attacks are Concussive (effective vs Unarmored). Xenomorphs make several attacks per round, and I've considered not only using different animations for each one (a swipe of an arm, a whip of the tail, and a quick lunging bite with the tounge), but making one of them- the bite, or the tail on the larger units- be Explosive type (effective vs Light Armor). Also, when they die, they burst into a small pool of acid-blood, which deals Armor Piercing Damage to units that move over it.

As for 'spitting' their acid, I have yet to see an Official soruce of this, or from anything relating directly to Alien or Aliens, and untill then it has the likelyhood of being used as the Alien Newborn. :P

Uh, in Aliens, when they're getting back into the ATC, doesn't an alien spit directly in Hick's face? Or am I just remembering the movie wrong.

Maybe I am remembering it wrong. I know he gets hit with the splash of the explosion after the shotgun blast. Maybe that's what I was thinking of.

I still think you might want to include at least ONE ranged unit for the Xenomorphs, being that so many of the other opposing units will be ranged and have mobile units as well. There could be a problem with turtling too. If you have a tower-type building, they may use several, and the Xenos might never get into range, despite speed.

Plus, you've taken away ranged siege from the Xenomorphs.

Edit: In Alien Ressurection, there is acid spitting. If you recall the part when they're trying to climb up the ladder, a Xenomorph spits acid into the face of the black guy's (with the pistols attached to his wrists face). And my roomate seems to remember it happened in Aliens and Alien 3 too. But I can't remember a specific moment.

I think they need some sort of ranged unit as well. Uts is just a horrible listener. :P

There were only two 'Alien' movies. I don't know what you're talking about. *plugs ears*

Anyone here familiar with the comics? I think it would be a common ground between those that think the xenies are too weak, and those that want to cut the crap out(#3 and 4[although I thought 4 was good for that far into a series])

I really want to track down some of the collections of the earlier Alien comics, but I don't want to base the storyline off of it, as that might lead to messy legal situations.

I was meaning for the spitters. Or maybe some other units that would balance out the Xenomorphs. I have to agree, while I don't know about a ranged unit solving it, I definately think that the Xenomorphs are lacking something.

actually, there needs to be an attack aerial unit too. Something like the Mutalisk.

And there is a definite need for a ranged unit.

edit: Another question, will you still be using the Hero system?
