window freezes

Post by dragon »

I have a new system that I built with win7 after I installed the updates it started freezing after a couple of minutes of logging in and I had to power cycle the system. Nothing shows in the event logs. Once in a while the system last for an hour before freezing. Is there a way to tell which update is the culprit with unistalling them one by one and then waiting minutes to hours to see if it worked?

Why do you need a monitor driver? The graphics card should be able to automatically handle any monitor. If it's some badly constructed shite that does not do things correctly, the monitor driver may well be the cause of your problems. I had a pivot monitor once, but the pivot software was a piece of shit that caused my machine to bluescreen every time I started the game I played the most, so I took it out.

People install monitor drivers because well they come with the monitor and the manufacturer wouldn't provide them if they aren't necessary/useful, right?
Yes, 107% of the time they're at best useless and at worst harmful (which might or might not be the case here).
Anyway, I can't see how deinstalling that likely useless driver could hurt. At worst, it won't fix the problem and if it's actually useful for a change, you merely have to reinstall it.

If it's locking up installation and only then? Could be bad sectors on the HDD. Could always try a chkdsk /f. You may also need to go into BIOS and (if it has the option and is even enabled) disable OS installation mode which caps a few things for compatibility.

Is there anything else it stalls on or just events where large amounts of data are being written to the HDD? Also, look for STOP errors in Event Viewer.

Other than that, you could start checking your board for shorts and/or blown capacitors.

If one wants to check the hard drive, Crystal Disk Info is excellent for that. It does a SMARTS test on the drive, and if that comes clean, then the chkdsk /f or chkdsk /r is the way to go. If CDI doesn't return clean results (there are reallocated sectors or uncorrectable sectors, or a non-trivial number of pending sectors, the HD is due a replacement). And non-trivial here is less than 10.

+1 for CrystalDiskInfo, I use it anytime I need to check a hard drive and Windows is still bootable. If it's not, well, that's what an Ubuntu Live CD and its Disk Information tool are for. :D
