I've patched it via usb drive. Still not working. No internet at home apart from phone. Tips would be appreciated.

Will it play games or Blu-Rays? Has it worked previously?

Only just got it. No games or blu-rays. No dvd use. Preowned system. Sorry for short sentences, using phone.

A quick Google search says you have to connect once online to access the DVD player functionality. I don't know what your "patch" was meant to accomplish. Best test, load a music CD or a video game. Does it even give a specific error? If it's disc unreadable, you could try blowing the disc drive out with PC dust remover spray. Or, likely better, purchase a lens cleaner disc and run it through the drive.

If you just need to send whatever bullshit "heartbeat" signal to Sony and you have hotspot connectivity on your phone, you could connect your PS4 to the phone wireless, activate (or whatever), and disconnect before it downloads any patches.

The patch was system update, solution given by googling. CD was not recognised.

To be bit clearer, system asking to connect internet for disc playback. System v1.5 and beyond should supposedly not need this.

I don't know what to tell you. You'll likely need to find some way to get Internet access long enough to activate the playback features.

Well, thanks for trying to help. I've had a bit of luck and will have a chance to use the internet of someone I know to try and sort it out tomorrow. Hopefully, that'll work.

Do you know how to turn your phone into a wifi hotspot?

I've seen that as an option. Unfortunately, I bought my phone because it was very cheap for a smartphone. As a side effect, it's kinda crap. It does all I need from it normally, but one of the things it can't do is become a wifi hotspot.
