Official STGOD Discussion Thread

Like it says, discussing STGOD's. Specifically, what we want for the first one here.
I'd rather not duplicate the post-apocalyptic, linear nature of the STGOD2, or the massive superfirepower(at least, not yet) of STGOD1, so I'm thinking something nice and low level to start with. I'm thinking the era of what Enterprise should have been. Smallish nuclear weapons, simple energy weapons, and tanks for ground forces. Magic should be allowed instead or with tech, but must be within the bounds of the limits placed.
I suppose since I'm suggesting it, I should say I'll accept the job of overseeing it, but I'm sure Phong might want to.

Sounds good. I'd say no more than a dozen planets colonized, with each faction controlling only parts of a particular planet?

Well, this would necessitate a larger emphasis on ground combat than has been the case previously.

Indeed it would, and by doing so, make the enviroment richer. In STGOD1, ground forces didn't matter at all.

Sure they did...
As statistics...

Much larger.
Suggestions: like Enterprise. Unfortunately, with even basic spaceflight it should be nearly trivial to make a one-hit one-kill missile. No ships at this tech level can possibly resist megaton-level hits.
Indeed, how do you stop someone from using large numbers of nuclear weapons? Deterrance falls apart here, unless you restrict everyone to a single planet - and even then all it takes is an irrational player to ignite thermonuclear war.
Furthermore, with space dominance it becomes trivially easy to bombard enemy formations unless you can get some sort of deflector shield technology up. If they hide in cities, that changes things, but the resulting battles may very well destroy their infrastructure within.
Just some thoughts.

Well, point-defense lasers can destroy missiles in mid-flight, and perhaps all ships could be equipped with advanced ECM systems.

I agree Phong. In fact, I'd go so far as to say to hell with Deterrence... Nuke the shit out of some stuff. It keeps the ball rolling. Of course, players with nuked territory can recolonize and strike back.. I think in the STGOD1, only two nations got pounded out of existance.

You could try that, but the IIR signature of ships will make it relatively easy to target unless you try and swamp it's sensors with so much energy it burns out or something.
In the magical world of the STGODs, of course, we ignore this and go for the typical sci-fi way, but Nitram seems to want something a tad bit more realisitc.

Deterence is fear of being nuked out of existance by other's taking advantage of your weakness once you nuke someone else out of existance...

Yet the SKS and NRMD very nearly came to annihlation several times, remember - and the SKS and BC remained in constant Cold War. Be wary of unlimited nuclear warfare, especially on habitable planets.

Moreso a reflection of low tech level. We can, of course, build up to the fantastical tech which allows for shields and stuff.

Indeed, though it'll take time.

How do we divide up factions?

On ASVS at least, it was every player had his own faction.

It's a matter of designing your own faction to suit how you want to play the game. A good way to do it is to take the average stats that other people are posting and augment them. eg, you might want to add to the range of your weapons but perhaps reduce the damage capacity. Of course a good way to do it is to have individual ships that are built for specific purposes. That way you'll have all your bases covered and wont present any weeknesses against any specific empires. Or perhaps you might to structure your forces so that although you do have weeknesses against one of them but overall you're stronger against another. As long as it's within guidlines you can do pretty much anything.

If we do have a new STGOD here I might take a very very very small force...
Or restart the ATJ fast-food based empire.

Personally I'm in favor of high tech but crappy weapons.
ie, no planet busters or weapons designed to take out continants in one hit, but full artificial gravity, speedy ships and coffee machines that can make 118 different varieties of coffee.

So you're basically saying Federation level tech that explodes if you
cough on it?

"General Hausser, I want you to take the I SS Panzer Korps here, and
encircle this 'generator_g1' person, and utterly destroy him in a kesselschlact"
