Like the title says, what do you think is the best platformer game? My vote goes to Super Mario World.

Super Mario 3 is better than World as World is really very easy.

Qualititatively, I would say Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. It doesn't get much better than this game.
However, as far as importance goes, I would call Super Mario World the greatest/most significant of all time.

I'd have to say Megaman X and X2, followed by Super Mario World and SMB 3.

Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World, definitely.
SMW2: Yoshi's Island, if only for the psychedelic scenery (Don't touch Fuzzy!) and the great music.
Mega Man 3 as well.

Bah, Sonic and Knuckles+Sonic 3 was hella better. Despite being a platformer, I wasn't bored playing through all three characters and getting their Hyper/Super forms.

Front Mission 2: Gun Hazard (Japanese only, SquareSoft)
No fallng death (except for mission on aircraft wings), 360degree fire capacity, customizable and cool mecha, ally supports, C00L no nonsense sci-fi setting (no landing strategic bomber, Large particle Cannons, Space elevator with energy supply hijacked to power big cannon, Large mobile land fortress..etc), a plot (which my limited japanese skills can only grasp a tiny part of), cool missions (protect sucide warship attacking a bunker, rescue intelligence officers on foot without mecha, intercept enemy escaping aircraft (in air with weird controls...almost died the first time I tried), creating chaos in enemy fleet by attacking enemy ship rudder, clearing a mine field while three helos attack with off screen artillery and drop light mecha, capaturing flying battleships, (every game must have one...or a dozen), running away from demolition going off, great music and graphics (for SNES).
Customizable mecha can really mean a world of difference in playing style. Playing with automatic attack drones is a completely different story then heavy missile or off screen artillery. The style of play is kept relatively fresh, with different environments making control slightly different, like air, sea, and ground missions all require different touch. The mecha-less on foot mode also means some missions will involve alot of sneaking around to open doors and such. Some are on rail missions where one can't stop and those are always hertic. There is also a lot of boss fights, though the old find pattern is still the best way to win, except when specialized weapons are equiped.
All that in a 2D game!
I wish they'd make one in 3D in english.

Either Sonic CD, Super Mario World, or Castlevania:SoTN.

There's so many of them.
Let's get the nitty gritty.
Mega Man X4. Damn.
Supermario World.
All of the Super Mario Brothers
Metroid Fusion
All of the Sonics on the Genesis
X-Men 2 Clone Wars
Kirby's Dreamland
This one is virtually unknown, and so under rated.
The Nintendo Entertainment System's Kabuki: Quantum Fighter.

A very obscure title, but Metal Storm (by Irem) for the NES is probably my personal favorite platformer. In that, you controlled a mech that could reverse gravity and had to reach the end of each stage withing a given time limit. The game got really cheap at points (like the boss where you had to gravity flip constantly to keep from being rammed into the ceiling and floor), but still managed to be great fun.
Assault Suits Valken for the SNES (Japanese release only, AFAIK -- a sequel of "To the Earth" for the original Sega) was also a very good platformer. Extremely tight controls, flashy graphics, and interesting missions with regular cutscenes all made this a real pleasure to play. However, the LucasArts rip-off of that game, Metal Warriors, sucked.

DOUBLE DRAGON!!!! Okay, not the greatest or most influencial, but god Double Dragon is the coolest fighting game for the SNES. Not the original ones, the ones where you could throw guys, and pick up sticks and beat peoples heads in with them.
My real vote: Super Mario World!
Although personally I thought it was a bit too easy, which is why I like SMW3. Not quite as much as the orignal, but 3's up there. I mean, you get your fire flower, but then you get the frog-ability, and the flying squirrel ability, and you got to go into space (who needs gravity!), and all sorts of cool stuff.
I'm humming the theme song right now.

I actually have that one. Bloody difficult too.

I read the strategy guide on this one in Nintendo Power and thought about getting it...but this was way past the NES glory days.

GoldenEye, me and my friends played that heavily for about five years

Ironically, the game was delayed a full
six months after the NP guide came out (kind of like Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves). By that time, the NES was practically dead as a game system, and pretty much everyone had forgotten that Metal Storm existed.

Super Mario World 2: some great levels, like when inside the frog, and that final final fight with Baby Bowser, talk about tough!
