Quake 3 Trouble: EXTREME CHOPPINESS IN MULTIPLAYER!!
Posted: 2003-05-15 08:57am
by Einhander Sn0m4n
System Specs: (Feel Free to point and laugh. This thing's only good as a Pirate Ship or a Linux B0x!)
OS: Win2K SP1
HDD: Two Maxtor 5400RPM drives (10 and 60gig)
CPU: PII 400
GFX card: GeForce2 MX 100
RAM: 192MB PC133 RAM
Internet Connection: D-Link Ethernet Card with COX Cable ISP (bout the only thing on here half-respectable!)
Other than getting a totally new comp and throwing as much RAM, GFX, and CPU at it as I possibly can, what can I do to reduce the choppiness in Quake 3? This is admittedly a cheap pirate ratboat (it's basically a large HDD with a Cable Internet connex attached. GREAT for P2P Filesharing, but not so good for Quake...)
Anyways, the problem is as follows: I have no problem getting 60FPS against bots, but lately when I've been playing on the net, it'll get _EXTREMELY_ choppy when opponents or teammates are around, causing me to not be able to hit shit!! Worse, I play Instagib CTF where timing and reaction times are essential for flag-capping and defense. I would like some help with this problem which is currently wrecking my Quake 3 game something fierce!
All help will be greatly appreciated

You could attempt to buy a network card with better CPU utilization, like a good 3Com card. Update the drivers, update Windows to SP2 or SP3, defragment the drives and make sure they're on separate ATA channels

That might work, but I'm looking for a solution that won't cost me. If I have to pay a dime, I may as well pay the $800 it'll take to get a 3GHz Uber-Battleship...

Might as well. I guarantee framerates in the 300+ range.
But as for your old comp, it could just be a internet speed problem. Maybe you could fiddle around with that network/internet setting in Q3.

That might work, and besides, 300FPS lagging to 60 isn't a problem like 60FPS lagging down to 3 is!
Time for me to get a damn job...

Hmmph, I reckon I could take you in a 1 on 1 railgun duel, dood. No one short of the pros is as good as I am at Q3.

CHALLENGE ACCEPTED!!
D00d, you're on!!
Where you want us to fight at? (specifically, where's your location and what's your connection? I like fair fights)
Back on Topic: I used PowerStrip to cause my gfx card to overclock slightly during Quake and return to normal when it's done. I'll see how that worx...
*boots Quake and heads to <-gLu-> Fast Railz (Texas) 1.32 Server|77ms|65.113.115.248:27680...*

Egh I still get choppiness with MP. This time there's no relation to when players are within my field of fire or not. I think it's something called a 'Bursting Proxy'. YARGH!!!

Me, too. I play Q3 from my comp, which has a nice DSL line coming in, I live in NJ. when could you fight?

Get me on one of the IMs listed below. I'll see about arranging a duel this weekend (when my bf is at work and hopefully it's just me here).
BTW you have headfones? Cuz you're gonna need 'em! I like the thrill of the hunt!
EDIT: Oops I forgot to tell you where I'm @. New Orleans, LA on a COX Cable connex.
That means I'm gonna try to find an InstaGib server somewhere around Atlanta or DC so we both have equal pings...

LOL kool
Watch out for an Einhander Sn0m4n, E. Sn0 -+31337+- or in OSP circles [SDN]EinhanderSn(+).
He'll be a Red Klesk with a Railgun and several obnoxious keybinds...

Okay time to start a poll a wager.
Who will win?
My bet is on Einhander just because he's an older on sd.net
When the duel is all done please post who won so we can hail the winner and mock the looser.
BTW
is it best of 3 matches or winner takes it all?

-shrug- bet as you please, but I grew up on Quake, was weaned on Quke 2, and have acheive mastery in quake three. Ask hotfoot, he has a few hundred mutilated corpses lying around my hard-drive

Of course, if you'll recall, I took you from K-12 in Jedi Knight. Killed you with everything from the Concussion rifle to hand to hand.
Give me an equal connection and my own hardware setup, and I'll own j00, especially in JK2.

-Pssht.- Remember Action Quake?
And keep in mind, that you beat me back when I was 12, before I learned about mouse-keyboard combo.

Yeah, you either had a killer connection compared to my dinky dialup or I was on unfamiliar hardware.
And keep in mind, that you beat me back when I was 12, before I learned about mouse-keyboard combo.
So what? I didn't do mouse and keyboard until around Quake 3. It was totally even territory. I'd still own your ass in JK2.

Bit of an update on the choppy situation: Some other players at <-gLu-> have been complaining about bad choppiness, as well as other people on other servers too. This all suddenly started about a week ago. Something is really rotten in Valhalla...

Another update: I noticed that when it chops up, I can hear my hard drive (Not the D drive where Quake 3 is installed) going ABSO-FUCKING-LUTELY Bonkers!!! Something is causing my HDD to go nuts and slowing my computer down... GRRRR!!

It would be more fair if both of you play in a quake mod in which none of you guys is familiar with...hmm Dragonball Z Quake anyone? Sorry I can't join you guys, my computer is currently RIP.

How about if you're not playing Quake? Does your HD still make those noises?

What's your D drive?
And what have you set your "com_hunkmegs" to?

C is Boot (where i keep my Windows on
D is where I keep all my games, music, mp3s, warez, porn, etc.
com_hunkmegs is 128
Total RAM is 192.

Are C and D partitions? If so, they're the same hard drive, and it could be anything on your hard drive making the thing going bonkers.
At the very worst, your hard drive itself could have a problem.
