Played Halo in the store...

Ugh. I just reaffirmed my beliefs about the horrendous mishmash of the X-box controller.
The whole time I was playing, I had to keep looking to down to ensure that I was about to hit the right button, and the dual joystick control system PISSED ME OFF.
The game itself actually seemed well done, but the horrendous control system killed any joy I might've had while playing it.

Not much longer now... soon, the
true gaming platform will posses this game... and then you can use whatever control scheme you like.

I actually didn't find it that bad. I adjusted reasonably in just a few minutes, to the point where the people I was playing with (all being long-time Halo vets, me being the total newb) were reasonably impressed by my ability.
Granted, it doesn't have anything on the proven standard that is WASD + mouse, but it's not terrible.

Well, of course. Store controllers always suck. It took me about 10 minutes to learn the controls for Halo, and in a few hours of play, I never had to look at my hands.
Of course, M+K will be almost assuredly superior...

YGHJ + mouse is even better than WASD, because it's in the middle of the keyboard and gives you access to a majority of the keys.

I went through the campaign with DPDP and an S-controller, which wasn't too bad. Still nothing compared to the Dreamcast controller or even the Playstation design.
I prefer EDSF for keyboards, especially FPS. On a split-keyboard, you've got direct access to everything on the left side (with minimal stetching of the index finger or pinky. Unlike WASD, which requires much more akward positioning to hit the keys Z, X, and C, and especially T, G, and B). Putting it in the middle sound like a silly compromise; you get the middle in exchange for having to jump to *both* ends of the keyboard, which is all moere or less shaped the same and would probably confuse me for my fingers to re-position each time. Plus the spacebar is right below YGHJ, which isn't at all easy for me to reach. I'd prefer moving to the right side only rarely, like switching weapon/item settings.
Oh well, at least it's better than using the arrow keys.

Control wise, Halo took me about 5 minutes to get the hang of, now I kick it old school.

The Halo PC previews are unsurprisingly commenting about how much easier the game is to play without a gamepad.
Even the best designed gamepad is crap for first-person shooters- the only reason X-Box is worse is because of that big fucking green atrocity in the middle of the thing- just in case you forget what console you bought.

Bah. After many hours of playing Goldeneye and Perfect Dark with my cousins, I think I can say with some authority that the N64 controller is excellent.

Indeed. The N64 controller is THE controller for FPS games.

I said controller, referring to console controllers. And no, not every person with a bit of skill with K+M can beat anyone using a joypad.

The only decent console gamepad for FPS games is the Dual Shock. Two logically-placed sticks allowing you to move and aim independantly, and enough shoulder buttons to give you access to the vital controls without taking your thumbs off the sticks. I don't see how people can use the N64 controller for, well, anything.

The Keyboard is more than just a controller. It is GOD!

I agree with that, except I don't like that the Dual Shock moves. It can get really annoying when you're playing to have the thing vibrating.

You've got a point there, but don't most games have the option of turning vibration off? It's been a while since I've played a Playstation, but I'm pretty sure that's a common option.

*sits and looks at his trusty old Saitek Cyborg and his fairly new wireless Saitek joypad*
I think I'm okay on the controller front....

bolded: another reason I hate X-box.
Overall: I disagree. I had Goldeneye down in less than ten minutes. After nearly a half hour, I still couldn't get the X-box controller to behave.

Bah. I like my arrow keys and shift \ enter / , that windows right click key, and '. WASD is stupid, I hate the offset W.
