What services should I disable, or enable to start automatically on startup?

Be sure to disable automatic updates. That's one.

Unless you're on a big network, I think alerter can be disabled too.

I would either make Remote registry disabled or manual as well.

If you don't know what you're doing, don't screw around with services. It is far too easy to muck something up.

I got the automatic updates set so that I have to permit it to download things- going to disable it later.

Well one can always reenable services. Nothing important on here anyway.

Geez, daemon documentation on Linux easier. Just type in man [daemon name].

Unfortunately I'm now using debian, with the rc.* folders in /etc instead of a subdirectory of /etc. Makes running 'ls' on /etc an eyesore, with all those other config files littering the place. And this is w/o anything installed, just the minimal system. Can't change it either since some packages may depend on things being in the default location. Arrgh...

There is important, critical stuff in Services. As I said before, don't mess with it unless you know what you're doing.

I meant nothing important on my windows side that can't be solved by a reinstall, and I can always recover my files by booting using a bootdisk and sending off stuff to another partition, since I'm using FAT32. I did not mean that stuff in services was not important- I've only disabled the really obvious ones like remote registry.

Of course, I've got all the NetBIOS ports blocked to the Internet at my firewall box... so it doesn't matter if I leave it on or not

Messenger has its uses so I keep it on. Like Crazy, unsolicited NetBIOS requests are denied at the firewall.

Well doesn't matter. Attempted to move windows partition to end of drive to enlarge linux partition- process failed, but computer still boot up and worked as if nothing happened. Nuked the partition and started over.

I don't have a firewall (Yes, I know. In this day and age... bad idea.). Too lazy to get one yet, since I have to download all of these debian packages since I did not download the full distro all at once.

Well according to the site Einy gave, it's safe to leave things in manual.

Manual is good if W2K really needs it it can start a manual service.
