Return to Castle Wolfenstein

Am I the only person here to have this game? I've played plenty of 1st person shooters before, including the original Wolfenstein 3D, and this game is a VERY worthy sequel to it and Spear of Destiny. Lots of opportunities for stealth (the first mission of the fourth chapter is complete stealth) throughout the game so far and all the fun of blowing up Nazis. My only complaint is no death cry of "Freunleben!" (sp?) (trans?) from the SS guys. Oh well, still fun. id Software did their homework on this game, plenty of authentic weapons (and a couple fictitious) to keep the history buffs happy. The multiplayer is great. I've played with it a few times already and I absolutely love it! Look up Darth Blight some evening if you ever look for a game.

*snicker* Homework my ass. Are you referring to the 10-round internal magazine semi automatic "Mauser"?
But yes fun game. As far as stealth goes its pretty limited (you want stealth play Hitman 2 or Splinter Cell), but I used to own at multiplayer.

Yes, I know. Mausers were bolt-action single-rounders, buy honestly, how fun would that have been? Personally, I think they should have went with the M-1 Garand (which did have an internal magazine, albeit 5 rounds) than the Mauser, but pretty much everything else (the Thompson M1A1, Sten, Luger, Colt, MP40, grenades) were authentic.

The Mauser 98K had a 5-round internal magazine, the Garand had 8.

OK, then what was the American rifle that used a 5-round stripper clip? I saw them in "Saving Private Ryan" and in about every History Channel documentary on WWII weapons.

Probably the M1903 Springfield, used very early on in the war and as a sniper's rifle.

I have RtCW, but my framerate absolutely sux0rz (worse than Quake 3!!!), so to me it's quite literally unplayable. Just wait till I get my new ship tho

You have to do a *lot* of sneaking and use the sten. It is possible to make it. Took me about 10 tries...

Those über-soldats are frickin' cool though, too bad they are turned into the wussy death-knights.

Return to Wolfenstein was probably the worst FPS that I have played in a long time.
In the first few seconds I shot an average Nazi soldier 4 (FOUR!) times in the chest before he went down.
You can find a 7.62mm Mauser rifle and shoot someone in the chest several times before he dies, but if you find a Springfield 1903 bolt-action rifle with a scope (a .30 caliber rifle...probably should have been listed as .30-06 caliber) you can go into scoped mode and shoot someone in the leg and get an insta-kill.
Grenades are horribly underpowered. I tossed a dozen or so into a room with unarmored women with Sten guns, I didn't kill a single one. I watched as they exploded, causing no harm to anyone that wasn't in it's immediate blast area. So if a grenade falls near you, just step away a few feet and as long as the flaming explosion doesn't touch you, you will be fine.
I found the abovementioned Sten gun to be quite amusing as it can only fire 10 shots before overheating. Why exactly the gun can't fire when it is hot boggles the mind, perhaps their are sophisticated electronics which suspend the firing mechanism until the weapon cools down.
Sniping is pretty stupid also, you are encouraged to go for head-shots yet some of the more powerful enemies can survive direct hits to the head with a Mauser rifle and shrug it off.
And what is up with the Venom? I am supposed to believe that a man could carry and use a 12.7mm (.50 caliber folks) minigun with no problem? Even if this thing uses short ammunition like a .50AE pistol cartridge, the recoil would be incredible...and so would the damage. Yet this weapon doesn't have the power that it should.
And what is up with that Paratrooper rifle? I distinctly remember hitting a guy in the chest about 5 times with those 7.62mm rounds before they fall, some enemies require even more?
What I really hate about the game was that you can carry a literal arsenal of dozens of weapons. How exactly are you supposed to do this? I recall having 3 rifles, a shotgun, 3 SMGs, 2 pistols, a flamethrower, an RPG, about two dozen grenades, a "Tesla" gun, and a .50 caliber minigun. All this and I can run around, climb and jump. WTF???
Now about those women I mentioned earlier. They wear this skin-tight body suit and are armed with a Sten gun. The Sten was a BRITISH weapon, why in the hell are Nazi's using them. And what is so special about them that they require a dozen 9mm shots in the chest to kill them?
I enjoy games like Ghost Recon because of their die-hard realism...

I hate the game. The graphics are shit, the weapons models suck, and other problems have already been descirbed- mostly with the ludicrous weapons aspect.
Medal of Honor is the far superior product. And Call of Duty is gonna kick much ass.

Actually Germany manufactured a copy in some numbers for commando forces, infiltrators and guerrillas

So do I, and the addons make it even better.

My only complaint about games like Ghost recon is they're too bloody short....the original only had 15 missions...the game could be bloody amazing...but if it's not going to last that long...then it's not worth the money...that's the only thing that annoys me these days about games...(that and the lack of gameplay it seems)
Why can't people make games that last WEEKS...not mere hours?

If you want massive games, play an RPG (a
real one, not Diablo 2 or a clone thereof).

I like Neverwinter Nights but that is almost a clone of Diablo 2.
For a kickass rpg get Baldurs Gate 1 or 2 and Planescape Torment

I love this game. I used to play online a lot, but due to time constraints had to stop. It's bad fucking ass online though. I'll have to kick that thing back into high gear and run with you sometime.

[Rant]
I specifically mean these rpgs..not the ones where you have to pay to play because...quite frankly, fuck that...When I pay money to buy the thing, I expect to play without further charge....
Now Baldurs gate 2...it was fine for story but as an rpg, it was not...I define an rpg as being able to take a character and be able to Live the life they have..not that you have a bunch of stats, a sword and a paperdoll... roleplaying is making something that grows to be it's own personality that you merely helped and added to, shaping it to be an actual person in that world where you have created something....calling the games they make these days 'rpgs' is an insult really because it is all stat based...honestly...do you walk down the street thinking about what your int roll is?.. no. because it doesn't exist and nor would it in the world you join
NWN persistant online worlds are a bit better for this in that , with a few packs...you can live the life and get involved with it all...you can rp your heart out and if you've good mods.. have a wail of a time with it.
Morrowind was a step in the right direction but it didn't go far enough...you can't do -everything- or indeed most things other than fight. (via magic or sword) although it did come closer to the do everything than previous rp's. Without the ability to do anything, you can't call it an rp...it's a hack and slash with your own potions added.
The creators these days do not thing far enough outside the box...perhaps they did in days of old...but they do not now.
Question, why shouldn't fps be big games? your paying full price for something you'll blast through in 3 days if your lucky...when you've done that blasting...what then becomes the point in the game?
It sucks to have a picture of what you -want- in an rpg...and then have designers throw out the utter liquidy dogshit they call 'rpgs' us gamers then proceed to step in and get conned by
That is if you can get the thing to work without five thousand patches.

Frankly, I enjoyed the lack of emphasis on realism. There are plenty of games which already cater to the realism-addicts, and to have a sequel to Wolfenstein 3D without the chaingun from the original would have pissed me off.

It's called multiplayer. You might not know this, but many if not most people never even play the missions with such games. They go right online to fight humans, who make far better foes.
