I just finished the first level of the Nebula, and I want to know just how big my cap-ship fleet should be? It seems so small...

Capture, capture, capture. It's the only way to break the unit cap limit.

That about sums it up right there. Any time you get a chance

Even when you don't get the chance.....make it! :D

8 salvage corvettes backed up with a cloak generator will make sure they get to their target and capture it unharmed...it's a bastard's tactic...but it does work..

I actually was already doing that, though that mission turned out to be a gold mine, I just finished the mission with the ghost ship, and I lost ALL my fighters and Multi-gun corvettes trying to take out that damn thing, finally did it with a second wave of defenders, but now I am strung for resources and am barely able to rebuild my fighter fleet, much less my corvettes for this.

Did you destroy the ships guardin the ghost ship? And there is a lot of recourses in that leval, just really spread out.

Wait a minute! You destroyed the Ghost ship? Is that possible? How many years did it took?

The Ghost ship mission is best done with fighters keeping the capital ships busy, while the salvaging corvettes do all the ... um, salvage, after all, it's one Missile Destroyer, two multi-beam frigates and a few assault frigates, plus one ion-array frigate!

As for the capital ship count, it's BIG. Theres a later mission where you can salavge to your hearts desire, and it can reach over a hundred ships...

Didn't technically destroy it, just knocked down its field. I'm waiting for the Resource units to finish collecting, I might take it on with my destroyers and ion cannons.

I actually lost 6 of my salvage corvettes to the damn thing, and just rescued one multi-beam frigate. Though I did gain control of the rest fo the ships after I knocked down the field.

::dreads the number of salvage ships that's going to take.

Man, but you need to have some serious patience. That big, juicy ball of ion frigates is endless. I remember the last time I played I grabbed about half of them. It took ages.

I never grabbed them all, mind you, but I've read in the relic forums someone once did...
I'm usually quite happy with 20 of them...

Besides, I'll go for the portals, and wait for the cruisers to show up, those are the real treats!

The game doesn't allow to destroy it. So finish with the resourcers and jump out, Hiigara is waiting!

Yeah, funny, I never did go for the Ghost ship first, I always get enough salvage corvettes to rescue all the ships, loosing several in the battle, but I never tried to knock down the filed first. Stupid.

As for the later level, it all depends on the number of ships you have to grab at any one time. Saying more is to spoil the fun, just use your carrier(s) wisely.

An example, if you're attacked by four frigates, then you'll have to get ten corvettes, since at least one goes down in the process. It helps to have either a repair corvette of a frigate to "heal" any corvettes that get attacked.

If you have any multi beam frigates left over once your at the last mission, build three cloak generators, that way you can keep the MBF cloaked indefently, you can take out the enemy mother ship with only one but more would speed it up.

I don't go much by "special" techs.
I'm more of a jackhammer philosophy, the enemy mothership can't do much against four cruisers, 10 destroyers and over 20 ion array frigates, can it? EHEHEHEH.

I find that scouts set on evasive wil distract enemy ships long enough for the salvage corvettes to get in. Obviously use your interceptors to take out any of their fighters first. Getting missile destroyers is trickies, but if you distract it with one of your DDs or CAs and then come in from behind with salvagers it's doable. Oh, and I'd suggest make as many missile DDs as possible as soon as you can, because it's easy to steal up to the unit cap in normal ones, and missiles ones are hard to find.

Try and capture as many Multi-beam frigates as possible when in the nebule. Those things are nasty. Just one of them can take down your mothership in minutes!!!

Something that i've found with the Cathedral of Kadesh mission is that if you kill off the three jamming ships quickly enough, the multi-beams that survive tend to just sit there and not resist capture (especially if they're still lined up near the "Cathedral" itself). I once managed to net eight multi-beam frigates this way; unfortunately, I lost a number of conventional ion beam and assault frigates in the blitz against the jammers, but more than made it up in subsequent missions.

Too late for that now!

If you play the game real good you can manage to get 18 multi beam frigates. Those things freaking rock against anything destroyer sized or larger. Also if your careful you can get three heavy cruisers before you can even build them.

My personal recomendation is to turn off the unit limit cap because 6 destroyers is just not enough. I usualy want 10 destroyers and another 4 missile destroyers just to escort my 6 heavy cruisers...

Why stop at just the destroyers?...when you get gravwells...capturing everything that even moves is possible...even fighters...made it my policy when I was romping round the inner core systems to take everything...absolutely everything they had and make it mine...

:D

I liked the design of their cap ships...what can I say?
