So you couldn't update? Maybe something was wrong with your connection for example a firewall. Did you use the Half Life update utility?
Here is a link, I hope it helps.

Updating Half-Life is such a draconian proccess. I dread it everytime I have to do it. Finding a server that has an active link is tough when you haven't played it in a while. The update utility almost never works right. I'd just download the patch straight to you HDD and run it from there.

Try Here

Try this Mod out. Can't wait for 2.0

Sorry about the link. Looked good to me, but such is the way with a game made back in 98. Anyways, as for mods...

Most are Team-based objective or Team-based Deathmatch. I'm posting in the belief that you know nothing about HL, so don't get annoyed if I'm posting what you already know.

Counter-Strike: Team-based Death Match (with maps that deviat). It's counter-terrorists vs terrorists. Terrorists plant bomb, CTs disarm bomb and kill all bad-guys. You get MP5, desert eagles, and all other fun stuff. Warning, this game is plagued by idiots. Don't get discouraged, there are good servers out there.

Natural Selection: Think of Aliens (the second one) meets Starcraft. The com gets a starcraft like interface, while the marines build stuff for him. The mod comes with a full slide show.

Day of Defeat: Haven't played this, but it sounds like Medal of Honor with crappy graphics.

Team Fortress Classic (probably came with your game): This mod stole months of my life. It's almost all CTF with different classes (spies, engineers, Soldiers, and many others). I'm still waiting for TF2 (and HL2 for that matter).

Richocet: DON'T PLAY THIS. It comes with the 1.1.1.0 patch and sucks balls. It's like Tron, but 1000000% more retarded. I can't even explain what it's really about because my mind must have blanked it out.

Look here for a better list. I've heard good things about Firearms.

From what I've seen, the best way to update Half-Life is to simply go to http://www.planethalflife.com and download the most recent update file. I never mucked around with the update tool.
