BF1942 Question

How's the combat work in there? A UO/SWG type subscreen thing or like an FPS? Just wondering...

Also, how does the game as a whole work? Is it really like an MMOG where there's stuff going on all over the place, or like just a really huge bunch of multiplayer games of eight people or so?

Lord no it's not a MMO. It's a standard FPS with the ability to drive Tanks, jeeps, Destroyers, Aircraft carriers, Bombers, Fighter planes, and self-propelled artillery.

Download Desert Combat and you can fly F-16's, A-10s, and Apache's.

The server can support up to 64 players (although the hardware requirements are off the scale, not including bandwidth). It's team based objective. You and your team capture spawn points. Whoever controls the most control points makes the other teams "ticker" go down. If it hits 0, you loose. There are other gameplay modes, but conquest is the most common.

If you've played Medal of Honor, it's like that but 1000x better.

Yep, just a prettier, smoother, less realistic Operation Flashpoint, with more FPS/arcade elements than sim elements.

I've only got an Athlon 2000+ and GeForce 4MX and 64 players runs fine. I do have cable however.

If you run with all Dsl or cable people and all have over 500mb DDR ram and all running over 2ghz processors with Gforce4 video cards, it runs fine. When you get some loser with 56k, the game just dies.
I have played with 64 people in one game for over an hour without any appreciable lag, so.

Use the aircraft carrier to ram smaller ships!

You hosted a 64 player gaming server on a cable connection? I doubt that considering the minimum required for a 32 player server is a T1.

Why would a 56k lag a server on a game based off of UDP? If anything, the guy with the T3 would be hogging most of the server bandwidth and would cause the lag. I've never found any actual evidence that dial-up modems cause lag for other players in an online server. If games were built using TCP (Ha!) that would be an issue, but then all gaming would suck.

If that doesn't work I'll find better hosting (copy and paste).

BWAHAHAHAHA!!!

That's how they shoulda taken out the Yamamoto (sp) in the first place! Fucking hilarious...true carrier vs battleship combat...though you gotta feel bad for that poor warship ramming you on the side.

promotion of the game and lack of lag

actually it seems, atleast for me, that there doesn't seem to be much lag, and certainly only on certain servers. That is to say that i regularly play on max 64 player servers and i don't notice any problem

system specs: 1.9 ghz with geforce 3...which doesn't matter as much as roadrunner online cable connection...

just my input thx :)

Look, its a n00b! Heh, sorry Andrew, but every n00b gets a *poke*. :)

EDIT: Now I wish Casey would go ahead and make a post, so I can track him down and poke him.

Annoyingly enough I can't p0k3 him. No matter. He will suffer in other ways.

If he's on a good cable node he could easily exceed the bandwidth of a T1.

Of course, the video card doesn't really matter for the server version - your AXP 2000+ probably is enough.

Download maybe, but rarely will you reach that on the upload. Every site I've seen rates cable up to 6 players.

Link This info in this link seems to have been cut and pasted to many other sites on this issue.

I'm almost 100% certain a cable modem wouldn't come close to 64 players considering the ones I've seen are usually on T3+. And the pings would be horrific as the game grew. I'd bet the ISPs main line would choke before anything. Maybe he meant a Co-op bot server.
