Windows ICS+extra gateway help

Um, ok, I installed ICS on the win98 computer, and my linux box can connect to the internet through that. However, after setting that up, windows f*cks up when I try to reset the TCP/IP settings on my network card to use the Linux computer gateway(in case that computer is dialed out instead).

The linux side works, ie it can run as a gateway, using the modem, and run as a client (though spent hours figuring out that I needed to write a shell script that would route things from the ISP when dialed out instead of to 192.168.0.2(the windows box)). How do I get windows to do the same?

Is there any way to reconfigure network settings using a batch script on windows to disable/enable ICS and disable/enable routing through the linux box?

In summary, windows 98 can either be a NAT server or client, but not both. How can I work around this?

Oh, and btw Darth U wants ICS too, but probably wants it configured on his (Spanky's?)WinXP computer.

I don't think you can. Windows 98 ICS is a lot like AOL: works great for default settings, but will fight to the death to run any kind of customized setup. I've found that even changing the IP address of the Windows 98 machine at all will disable ICS and force you to reset it back to defaults.

Figures  . Oh well, hopefully Faram or Phong knows a way. Also pretty stupid how it requests that you restart the computer after changing one setting. Will win2k work?

That was the way 98 was setup. I believe 2000 is better for ICS, but you could always just download a thrid-party NAT software. I don't have any links off-hand.

That said, IIRC Windows 2000 should allow you to setup advanced routing, but even if you have to change it manually, it won't require a reboot.

W98's NAT will not allow you to do that. You need 2K or XP for more sophisticated NAT and routing.
