Trouble with Direct X

I am at my wit's end. I was trying to install and play the demo for Empire Earth, because it had worked before. However, while the installation suceeded, the game keeps on crashing. My bro suggested getting upgrading DirectX to 9.0, but when we tried, it simply would not install!!!
HELP!!

I thought direct x 9 is still unsupported by lots of stuff?

Yeah, install direct x 8, that's what i (think) i still have.

No, the extra DX9 features are not widely implemented, but it is backwards compatible.
