Wanna make a SWvsST game?

Post by Slartibartfast »

Nothing fancy, just using an engine like Game Maker, plugging some graphics and sounds, and watching it go :)

My idea is a vertical shooter. You pilot the Falcon, and after a while of shooting down TIEs and other weak SW ships, gets sucked down a wormhole and has to defend itself against Klingons, Romulans and eventually the Feds who have gone apeshit (going from weaker to stronger, having defiants and birds of prey as cannon fodder, and the really big stations or ships like the Sovereign as bosses/mini-bosses.)

I think it'll be fun, who wants to help? :D

I'll volunteer my services. It might help me with skills needed to develop my NWN module.

Any plans so far?

Well, first step would be to have some nice backgrounds and ship sprites, like the falcon, maybe a couple of different TIEs and a klingon BoP.

I only have some really crappy top-view of the falcon that doesn't translate very good to a shooter, and it lacks animation (it would be neat if the ship could slant to left or right when you move)

The background, basically tiles that look good as stars, etc. Since the first levels involve killing in the SW universe, probably we'll have some ISDs as background - pretty much invulnerable or having the typical destroyable cannons.

But as of now, just the sprites and stars would be enough to "playtest" the thing. I've noticed some shooters made with this game have about the right feeling (I recommend downloading Andis Shooter if you want to have a taste)

I know exactly what kind of game you are talking about. I still have a few floppy disks full of games like this. Theres one that's pretty good, can't remember the name, but you are this blond guy with a big chin that goes in and out of wormholes and makes close fly-bys of ships...

Anyway, I'm thinking something like that. Levels in space, with all kinds of crap flying towards you, and then when you get to the big "boss" ship, it could go to a different level, where you skim the surface of the ship, taking out cannons and things like that.

About actually doing this: I CAN'T DRAW! I can search for pics and things, but never ask me to draw anything. Other than that, this seems fun!

Well I could make some rendered drawings from the models at SciFi3D, but I'm kinda stuck with a small hard disk so I can't install 3d studio...

Anyway, if you want you can try finding all the ships (top view) you can related to Star Trek (less from Star Wars). With those I think we can manage to get a working game. They should be the adequate size (I'm making the falcon about 64 pixels long, and I'd like to keep the sizes to scale) or larger.

Thanks for the interest, I just realized that the only way to make a balanced SW vs ST game is make a shooter where you drive a tiny ship and kill waves upon waves of ST ships ;)

Nice, nice. I suggest tho (and I could do it for you, possibly):

more space at the bottom of the screen to move

collisions with the ties (i'm sure it's in the plans)

powerups!

different weapons! (maybe a missile or "kill everything on screen bomb"?)

One time (playing the "gnome edition"), the Falcon turned left while in the middle of the screen, and stayed on the "turn left" image. Other than that, no bugs so far.

Actually that's reserved for your panel (where your life and score will show) unless I decide on a transparent hud.
collisions with the ties (i'm sure it's in the plans)
Yep. But I'm thinking about it (since TIEs pilots shouldn't be that stupid, dunno)
powerups!
Definitely! Probably things like faster fire rate.
different weapons! (maybe a missile or "kill everything on screen bomb"?)
For now I'm thinking about the laser turret (auto-fire but has a "heat" bar that needs to cool between bursts) and concussion missiles (and other types of missiles, like the bomb you said)
One time (playing the "gnome edition"), the Falcon turned left while in the middle of the screen, and stayed on the "turn left" image. Other than that, no bugs so far.
The Falcon only returns to the center image when you aren't pressing any keys. Right now I'm not sure if it's a bug or a feature (nothing I can't change tho)

I'm also thinking about having a single life. And a life bar (damage), also a shield bar that goes up somewhat fast... in that case you also get hit more often and can't dodge everything, so enemy lasers would be sorta fast - I mean, you're expected to get shot, you only get perm damage or die if you get shot more than the shield recharges.

EDIT: Anyone knows what are the "dissipation factors" of the Falcon according to books like ICS or any other?

I've got a model of the Falcon (painted black) and a digital camera, if that can help in any ways.

Currently I'm using graphics rendered with 3D Studio, with models I downloaded from SciFi3D. I already found a repository for Trek ships... I'm probably going to download Tyrian and other shooters to get a feeling of what a fast action-paced shooter should be...

SW Capital ships for now are just going to be in the background. Maybe some turrets will shoot at you and the ability to disable them, like in most shooters where there's a big boat. Trek ships will be mostly in two groups: cannon fodder (little ships, like shuttles, or slightly stronger "defiants" - don't remember the class) and larger ships, "starships" like constitutions, etc, mostly will be two or three times the size of the Falcon. Some special ships will be bosses, like the Enterprise-E or Borg Cube - will have more resilience and will take a bit to destroy.

I think it was a good choice to use the Falcon... not too much overkill, since I'm trying to keep the difference in power levels realistic.

The idea is to have one or two levels that take place in the SW galaxy, probably some Endor-like battle, in the end you win but get sucked into a wormhole. Each groups of levels will be a different period of the ST galaxy, not sure if I'll include the NX-01 era tho.

You can make the original Connie the final boss. TOS was so much more powerful that B&B Trek.
