Starting MOO3

Well, my wife let me buy MOO3 yesterday (not before she got a lot of things herself), and I installed it on this machine and began looking the game over. About an hour later, my jaw dropped -- such a difference between this game and the previous two --> seems to be made for micromanagers. Commanding a real company wouldn't be much more difficult than this game (except you can't place life on PAUSE). Didn't even get out of the interface yet, but the game appears daunting to say the least...

I traded it in yesterday to get 10 quid off another game, first time I've done that to a game in donkeys years, so that shows you what I think of it.

I would have returned the POS, but I left it for too long. What a waste of money.

And I needed something to remind me to read the online reviews by gamers 1st

I didn't have a problem with it, actually. Its got problems and is far from what it should have been, but I don't think its horrible.

Can't figure out how to build ships -- designed a colony ship, but the dang things just won't build. Too bad they had to totally redesign the ship-building system with which all MOO2 players were familiar...

NOO!!!

If you can, return it ASAP and get GalCiv or Escape Velocity Nova instead!

You have the design first, right? And it's not on the obsolete list, right?

In that case, go to whichever planet has the highest industrial rating (it's represented by some blue icon--I'd know what it was if I was looking at it) and put a bunch of colony ships on its military build queue. That's how you build ships.

But you might want to put a bunch of ships like troopships and colonyships on the obsolete list first, otherwise the automatic AI'll build those only and not build any of the more advanced ships you might have designed.

Okay, figured out that part...

Found the "military tab" for the planet in question and saw the building queue, but was unable to affect it. :?

Think I figured out the obsolete thingie, but you're talking over my head for now...

Okay, I've been playing MOO3 for a few hours now, and I think the following from this article best describes the situation:
However, many aspects of MOO3 should have been scrapped at the beginning. One glaring problem is the 165 page manual. While holding an interesting background storyline for the game, material inside is poorly organized and not extremely helpful. Gamers unfamiliar with Master of Orion will have a hard time jumping in, especially with inadequate instructions. Many aspects of game control, once intuitive, are now more difficult to find and much less user friendly.

Master of Orion 3, while succeeding in many aspects, fails miserably in others. While die hard fans of the Master of Orion games will definitely find some enjoyment of this title, it proves to be complex, confusing, and ultimately a lot more of an investment to the novice or uninitiated gamer. However, the title is still shades better than “Not Recommended.”
That about wraps it up -- if you're a big fan of MoO and MoO2 (as am I), then you hold out hope that this game will become entertaining. Reminds me of why I kept buying Metallica albums after And Justice for All -- kept hoping they would produce something good, like they used to... BTW, Load was the last Metallica album I purchased (with the exception of their latest "Garage" album)...

There should be another tab somewhere around there. It leads to a menu of military stuff.
But you might want to put a bunch of ships like troopships and colonyships on the obsolete list first, otherwise the automatic AI'll build those only and not build any of the more advanced ships you might have designed.

The AI can manage your empire without your interference. It takes care of the tedious chore of developing your colonies and making buildings. It also builds military units automatically. If you don't set your build queues manually the AI will do it for you. Unfortunately, the AI has the annoying habit of building troop transports and ground forces to the exclusion of everything else.

I returned my copy shortly after I got it, really I don’t know why I even tried it after my best friend with identical tastes returned his.

How about, have it need money to upgrade system, because it won't run....

You might find the MOO3 FAQ more useful than the manual.

I even bought the damn strategy guide......d'oh!. although the game really isn't bad, it is just way too fucking complex, and not well organized. once you get going it gets entertaining.
