Why is software so fucking expensive?! I want to buy Adobe After Effects so I can do some nice special effects for my movies but the damn thing costs nearly $700 ($699  )!! How do people afford it? I mean you can buy a good graphic card for that amount of money. Is software really supposed to cost more than the hardware? I certainly think not.

I need to get Maya.. Just think how I feel..

Maya Complete 5: $ 2000

Maya Unlimited 5: $ 7000

Um.. yea. I will never be buying it. But there are other ways..

The market for composition tools such as AE is rather limited, so for Adobe to recoup their costs and make a profit the price must be reasonably high.

And do you two actually need AE or Maya?

With the number of computer geeks "acquiring" Photoshop for personal use one would think that the market would be larger than it seemed.

They obviously aquire AE for personal use as well.

One could try finding it here...

Most geeks do not need Photoshop for what they do. GIMP or PSP or the cheaper Photoshop varient probably would work fine, they aren't using the vast majority of PS's features (e.g. CMYK, LAB color).

I should have clarified: the demand curve for people who actually would purchase PS is rather low.

Well it's not like I'd die or something without it (at least I hope not  ). But making special effects would be a whole lot easier if I had it...

What's really funny is game developers whine about piracy, when every single one of them have had a pirated copy of Photoshop or Lightwave on their hard drives at one point or another.

Everyone's a hypocrite until it happens to them.

Then you don't actually need it, no? It's not like your livelyhood depends on AE?

So would I. But I would set up a Paypal account and accept donations...

And I wouldn't do something stupid like affiliate myself with Gator, WhenU, LOP, etc. Nowadays pulling shit like that is tantamount to suicide.

Also, the more expensive software is, the crappier it's container is. Seriously... you buy those $10 discount games in those nice jewel cases... while some of the new games only come in a paper sleeve with plastic so you know what is inside... Hell, Maya doesn't even have a plastic window, just a paper sleeve... some companies just box the CD-ROM without any protection at all. (Eep!)

I didn't mind the original link very much, but you didn't need to blow it up to large text size. I generally allow links to P2P applications.

No, obviously not. But rotoscoping would be so much easier if I could create filmclips and import them into Photoshop (don't tell anyone but my copy is pirated :P )...
