Problems with old games

Namely the installation of WC: Privateer. I've been itching to play it for years and now that I finally downloaded it I can't play it! Something about Windows ME not having DOS. It's just been sitting there on the harddrive for months...

This problem extends to all old games, as well (like Elite). How can I get Windows to play these games?

Unless you get old of either Win98 or Win95, you're shit out of luck.
Of course, you could also create a disk partition and install the good old Dos6.
(Christ, the hours I spent messing with Config and Autoexec... those were the days.)

Windows ME stripped out DOS, unfortunately. Also, many old games had improper timing implementation, meaning that they'd be unplayably fast on your computer.

Um, you can always try to use a boot disk, either made with ME or Win98. It's not like Windows uses NTFS or anything.

Isn't there also a related problem with DOS4GW?

Believe it or not, but ME did not totaly strip out DOS. Its hard as hell to find and run, but I have heard repeatedly that it is still that. That said, don't bother. Try downloading Virtual PC and getting the crack for it. You can then install DOS on a virtual OS and use Virtual PC to recognize all your new hardware and convert it into signals that Privateer will understand.

The old DOS extenders sometimes have issues, but that's more of an XP Virtual DOS Machine issue.

Is it also possible to run an OS inside another, like say run windows 3.1 or DOS over windows 9x, like if you needed one of those to play a game.
