Best online game

When college starts up in a little less than a month I'll finally have regular access to a broadband connection. What's the best online games out right now? I usually like 1st person shooters or stratagy games, been playing Soldier of Fortune: Double Helix Gold Edition online at school and it kicks ass. Any suggestions for me?

Counter-Strike. Ignore the naysayers, this game is one of the best online games I've ever played. It also has a huge community, and your college might even have a clan, maybe someone running a server.

But seriously, it started as a very respectable mod and I played it quite a bit. But the community and the game with it has degenerated to the point where I would rather play Swamp Buggy Racing for an entire week than play CS online (I could theoretically be tied to a computer and forced to play it in a LAN party, though).

Day of Defeat is a very good HL mod, though it too has degraded somewhat with the latest version, IMO. Firearms is an average mod, has some goods, some bads (namely, the few last lingering CS-style game mechanics).

But aside from HL mods, there's quite a bit of good stuff out there.

- America's Army, this one is a no-brainer, its fucking free.

- Battlefield 1942 is very fun if you don't mind the lack of historical and technical realism.

- Jedi Knight II is always a good thing, though you might want to wait for Academy.

For strategy, I highly recommend Rise of Nations. Age of Empire 2 + (Empire Earth - shittiness) + new = good

Blitzkrieg is quite impressive as well, if you don't mind shitacular American voiceovers, piss-poor British ones, and shabby German.
(Read: the game is awesome, but voiceacting talent seems to be rare in south-east Europe)

It has single player basic training, advanced marksman training, and airborne training. Everything else is multiplayer.

EDIT: There is also an... um... "Easter Egg" in basic M16 qualification...

Notice this is what most of the naysayers...say. "The community sucks". Just fucking ignore the community and play the damn game. There's thousands of servers running at any time, if you don't like the people on one, FIND ANOTHER! (If you live in the South-Eastern US, especially FLA/GA I can give you a few good ones) CS != Everquest, it isn't important whether the players like each other or not. (although it does help to like your team, one good reason to try and find a local clan)

Firearms was okay, I haven't played it in a long while tho.

The newest version of DoD is the best so far, I think (yes I've played the earlier versions). It used to be pretty good, yet lacking something. Then they changed it, and it was horrible crap, and STILL lacked something. Now, it is okay, and almost has "something". It is actually FUN to have to plan and play good defense when you are getting your ass kicked.

But aside from HL mods, there's quite a bit of good stuff out there.

I didn't like AA, it was a good idea, but not implemented well. I played when it first came out, I liked the idea of training off-line before being able to go on-line, but all the damn servers for the final (on-line) training course were always full. Maybe that's fixed now, but I dunno. It's all a big Army recruitment thing, play it if you want, but the Army can shove it. (If I want to join the Army, It's not because a video game told me to...)

- Battlefield 1942 is very fun if you don't mind the lack of historical and technical realism.

VERY VERY fun, if you don't care about the historical aspects. Great game for just shooting the hell out of stuff in a big warzone, along with 63 of your friends. I love piloting the submarine, fun as hell. (if you don't like your team, grab the carrier and spin it around while people are launching their planes. That provides 5 min of fun, before they kick you). Of course, it's not all ships n' planes. There are some cool vehicles, and being on foot kicks ass (so does crashing a plane into a tank, parachuting out at the last second, and then capturing the last enemy flag... erm..)

- Jedi Knight II is always a good thing, though you might want to wait for Academy.

Bleh, JK2 isn't worth your time, with Academy coming out. I mean, it's fun online, but why buy this with an updated version of the same damn thing coming out soon?

The entire C&C series was good too, I haven't played Generals much, so I don't know about that, but Red Alert (1 and 2) both kicked incredible ass. Just make sure to stear clear of Tiberium Sun tho (different story, not as good I think)

1942 is great, I played it at a friend's house. Not very realistic, but still one of the funnest games I've played before.

I like TFC for HL, which is mostly non-stop action. DOD is ok... I kinda just hang back and snipe at anybody who comes near me.

A very good, if a bit obscure HL mod is Desert Crisis. Very fun, quite a small community.

As for CS... Lets just say that I started playing when everybody and their kid brother had aimbots. That really ruined the fun.

Blah, this is the wrong thread for a CS discussion, but I must say: With the Valve Anti-Cheat, most of them are blocked. In CS, only 4 or 5 (out of 100s available to download) aren't dectected. It's getting harder to cheat, and eventually those 4 or 5 will be dectected too. (I only found 2 for Dod in a recent check, it seems not many people make hacks for DoD).

Wayyy off-topic, but funny: Once, while testing a wallhack (i warned everyone on the server, even put testing-wallhack in name, they didn't care), I caught one person with a wallhack/aimbot (started aiming for my head before I turned the corner), and another with a really bad aimbot (tried to awp me compeletely FROM THE OTHER SIDE OF THE MAP, through a few walls and such)

Valve Anti-Cheat is a joke. Cheating Death actually works, though its hard to implement.

At any rate, you will notice that the community was only half my problem with CS - the game simply no longer competes. I am sick and fucking tired of dealing with assfuckers who strafe-bunnyhop-jump-shoot from around a corner, circle-strafe you, etc. This shit does not fucking work in combat, you wouldn't be able to hit dick with a Glock 9mm, much less "dodge" enemy fire.

The problems linger in other games, DoD included, but I rarely see the really bad stuff (except in Wolfenstein: ET, where I don't really mind as much*). AA:O does the best work to fix this that I've seen thus far.

*Getting hit by a Panzerfaust-armed soldier who started arming it before he jumped around the corner is still retarded, however.

Currently VAC blocks more than C-D (source: look around, I won't post any sites, but the number of "works under Cheating Death" is a lot more than "works under VAC" in 90% of the sites I've seen)

The game no longer competes? According to some places (maybe they pulled the numbers out of their ass, i can't find the sites that list stuff like this), CS still ranks way up there on the list of FPS in players per month or whatever.

Games are getting there, but there is nothing (at least nothing I've seen) that bests CS in it's catagory. It's hard to explain, but the games that have come out are too different from CS, and aren't close to being the same game. CS is the best of its kind (what kind that is, hard to classify. You get what I'm saying, right?).

CS is made to be FUN, not to be especially realistic.

HLGuard did the same thing to me and many others. C-D, it's been said, does this occasionally, but it's never happened to me, so I can't say.
