So I was playing Hearts of Iron last night as USSR, from 1936 to present with the no time limit mod. I started out real good, organized the red army to my spec, 12 infantry armies of 5 rifle divisions each, and 3 shock armies with 5 Rifle Divisions with Artillery brigades each. I concentrated like hell on TANK research while using my diplomatic influence to sway italy and the balkans deep into SOCIALISM (I also got Persia and Afghanistan to join my alliance). The Japanese were whooping on china, and I knew I would have to fight them later on when they joined the axis, so I began deploying my new build tank units there when they started coming online in late 1938. I had T-34/85s in December 1938, and JS-2 models ready for production in the first quarter of 1939. I put 5 tank armies in europe (20 divisions) under my best tank commanders, (Zhukov, Konev, Vassilevski, Rotmistrov, etc)and one in Vladivostok for use against the Japanese.
I took the Molotov/Ribbentrop pact and got half of Poland when the germans invaded it in september, starting their war against the allies. I got the winter war with Finland event, and puppeted them in a month. I built more forces and deployed for battle against Germany during the winter, and by April 1940 the Wehrmacht was at the gates of Paris. On April 20, Hitler's birthday, I DOW'd the Axis and invaded Germany. I quickly overran the token German, Hungarian and Slovak forces on the Polish border, and Zhukov was racing across northern Germany, while Rokossovski's tanks rolled into Berlin just a week after crossing the border. Zhukov quickly raced into Western Germany and down the Franco-German border, trapping the main German armies in France. My infantry forces under Marshal Tuchachevsky quickly conquered Slovakia and Hungary while my other tank forces mopped up the last German resistance in Czechoslovakia and Austria. I sent Zhukov into Belgium to waste the last German forces and conquered 2/3 of that country too, and then Annexed Germany. I quickly transferred 3 Tank Armies to the far East, and launched a powerful offensive against the Japanese. Within 2 weeks I annexed Manchukuo and I was pushing the Japanese back. I brought my tanks into the first line of the attack and broke the Japanese lines and quickly conquered all the Japanese possessions in China down to Shanghai. By January 1 1941 the USSR reigned supreme as a Eurasian colossus, because I used my Diplomatic Influence to draw Italy and the Balkans into the COMINTERN alliance as well.
Does anyone else have any cool HOI stories to share?

Nice.
Mine are mostly boring... Play as US, research lots of infantry and tank. Then when Germany invaded, I was ready to help out, landed 24 tank divisions on Caen, and 24 infantry in Amsterdam. My infantry units moved down and cut off supplies, as my tank divisions marched in and crushed all opposition. Then I pushed East with tanks are the spearhead and infantry right behind them to hold territory. Took over Switzerland on the way. Germany got their ass kicked so bad the France make them a puppet. Then I began a war with the USSR after landing another 24 infantry divisions, pushing all the way to Archangel. I left my forces there, then invaded Japan, starting at Shanghai, and pushed them Northwards. Then I landed in Tokyo, and moved South then North, finally annexing Japan. Began a second front in the East of Russia, landing in Vladostok (Or however you spell it), moved in and annexed Mongolia. I tried pushing further, but the weather really got to my troops...

I always just move on regardless of weather, in fact I never look at the weather map. I just avoid the provinces with low infrastructure or send tank corps of ADVANCED LIGHT TANKS (speed 16) across em. What I can't figure out is how to land marines or other forces in enemy territory from transports. I research all the tech and doctrines and stuff and I aim for provinces with beaches, but it never works. The thing is, the only countries I would ever want to try that on are UK and Japan, and if you wait long enough you can just burn em with Nukes anyway.

It took me a while to figure out that as well. When the transports are off the coast you click on them and in the box with their details in it (on the right on the screen) there is an "Unload Troops" button, click that and then IIRC right click on the province you want to attack.Falkenhorst wrote:I always just move on regardless of weather, in fact I never look at the weather map.
