I can't use PowerDVD because of my POS GeForce...

Post by StarshipTitanic »

When I pop in a DVD into my brand new DVD player and PowerDVD comes up, it tells me that I can't watch the DVD because I an active TV Out plug on my video card. The only movie I don't get trouble with so far is 2001 but I like PowerDVD because I can take screen captures. Help me.

The card is a GeForce 4 MX 420.
The DVD drive is a Samsung CDRW/DVD SM-352B.

I'll trade ya your GeForce4 for my GF2 and a ton of old hardware and MP3 CDs...

EDIT: Or how does this help?

So far I've seen multiple ways to fix it with that search. Right now I'm trying drivers...

I did! :) Apparently, Nividia decided not to include drivers that disable the Macrovision copyright coding in their latest drivers so I had to downgrade a few levels.

And that's why MPlayer kicks all the other DVD players' asses.

Unfortunately, there's no Windows version.

Ah yes...the macrovision shite again.....what you need to do is go onto the nvidia site and download drivers which are not macrovision compliant...you might recieve a hefty drop in performance but you will be able to play any dvd you put in the machine

Isn't the libdvdcss code for that of questionable legality?

Yeah, I had this problem a while back. I had to downgrade to 40.72. Any version after that causes this problem. Don't you just love nVidia's drivers lately?

So far everything looks pretty much the same as it did so I should be fine.

Libdvdcss is indeed of questionable legality (along with the MPEG2 decoder, which is unlicensed), but I don't really care about linking to it.

There's always VideoLAN Client as well.

nVidia has been having some issues for whatever reason as of late. Not as bad as ATI used to be, though (OTOH, Catalyst 3.4 won't remember my #$&*!# gamma correction settings)

I tried that already, it froze up or crashed every time I used it and I can't take frame captures.

GF2 MX 420? Ouch. A few weeks ago, I had a GF2 MX 200. But with my new computer came a 256 MB GeForce FX 5600 Ultra! (I find it impossible to not brag about this).

But seriously, get a new card. If you want a cheap one, a 128 MB GeForce FX 5200 can be bought for $120 C.

I don't blame ya. Even my GF3 would smoke that card with ease. (disregarding the fact that its hampered by my duron 700. :D)

And Q3a is nowhere near the most graphically demanding game in existence. Even shit-tastic original iMacs can play it.

Oh, and you know how in Jedi Outcast the Yavin Swamp level with all the rain, fog and plants makes the framerate nosedive? 200 FPS for me. :P
